Hello!

Well as a long term lurker, here comes my first post.

I come seeking some help...
I'm hoping to find a book that details some picturesque/good driving roads or journeys; almost in the vein of the famous top gear article for the greatest driving road in the world.

Does anybody know if such a book exists, be it for UK or Europe or even a worldwide one? After quite a long search, I've come up short!

Thanks in advance for any hope anybody can send my way!

Kind regards,
Richard

Exactly like that! But I was under the impression that it is now out of print?

Any other suggestions would be great too!

The Classic Motorsport Routes, by Richard Meaden is very good.

There's no 'definitive' book as far as I know - www.alpineroads.com is one of the best sites for the European Alps.

Maybe me and Mike need to tour the world in our cars and write that definitive book/website cool

Harold A. Meyer's "The Great Motor Highways of the Alps" (published under the pseud. Hugh Merrick) is well worth a read. It's brilliant despite being published over 40 years ago - very entertaining and some neat photos.

I wouldn't put a price on my copy but you can still get one fairly easily - although some parts are dated, the views, descriptions and the passes remain (virtually) the same.

They don't spell out the routes, but Top Gear did a book on great roadtrips (can't remember the title, but it's something along those lines), freelancer Alistair Weaver has done one and the publishers of Car did a bookazine called Epic Drives. I know theses are drive stories rather than routes, but they may give some hints or inspiration.

I can second the Meaden book above, and that does give maps etc.

I've got that and it's a good read. It gives you plenty of interesting history about the various routes. This forum and www.alpineroads.com are still superb places to get all the info you need though when planning trips wink

A word of advice though....don't pay £40 for it like off Ebay here

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Classic-Motorsport-Routes-30...

They were selling it for £5 a copy in Asda and The Works a few months back. If you look in The Works you can still find the odd new copy for about £7.99.
Or buy a secondhand one off the bookshops that specialize in motoring books.

There's a good secondhand copy for £10 from Platinum Books on Amazon... the others want over £30

Amazingly this is still listed at our library service, although in the county reserve. Worth a try.
