Yep - see maps and pics here: http://s164.photobucket.com/albums/u24/petermansel...

The roads on Mull were not in as good condition as the highlands but are still worth doing.

Me and you both, only in April! As I am finding though, rooms are already getting booked up.

ahhhh Pete - you make me homesick.....

CLK not really what is needed for Mull....these however... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbn-w5dEc74

To O/P - head W & NW and if you've time do try the islands.... get a calmac island hopper ticket http://www.calmac.co.uk/islandhoppingtickets

wink very quiet roads.... small number of PLOD, lots of the main A roads in west A82, A85, A87 whilst offering 'open roads' are frequently targets for cop clampdowns. Be observant.

Looks good - off surfing on Tiree?

I'll nudge Mull back to you... there are three ways on and off - Oban/Craignure (the main one), Lochaline/Fishnish and What's the Story In Balamory (Tobermory)/Kilchoan. The latter two might give you an interesting back road run to Mallaig. At a minimum, get first ferry over from Oban at about 8am (enjoy a calmac bacon roll or two) land at Craignure take a clockwise circular run round Mull on B849/B8035 (EVO took a Bentley and Ferrari round that...) and if your brave head up the B8073 to Calgary and on to Tobermory....then either ferry to Kilchoan or down to Fishnish....between 4-6pm and then evening blast to Mallaig...evenings are long.....what a day!

On Skye - blow your cash and treat yourselves - head to Dunvegan and the Three Chimneys...

Sorry for the hi-jack, but we are planning another trip up to Scotland in March and would like some advice on Applecross.

Is it a case of heading there from Tonapress, having some lunch in the inn, turning round and getting back on with it?

Also, what will the weather be like in in March, I'm hoping that the snow would have gone, but I'm a little concerned about the state of the pass.

Worth it, though. I've eaten there three times over the years and it has never disappointed.

Certainly head over from Tornapress and have lunch in the inn but then you have arguably the best bit still to come - the drive round the coast to Shieldaig! A single-track twisty road with fantastic views over to Skye, Raasay and Rona then round to Loch Torridon.

Weather in March very unpredictable (but then it usually is!) Certainly the Bealach can still be blocked with snow at this time of year but should hopefully be fine for you. Enjoy!

/\ What he said Mark. Definately do the Applecross 'loop' - there are a couple of nice beaches as well as great views. Indeed, if it IS snowing, you may HAVE to go the anti-clockwise route as the pass is often closed.

You'll have a great time! This was a useful thread on the subject:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

My contribution:

Here's a map of my perfect route, but it's a bit epic. There are great roads everywhere you look.

Some pics:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/giveitfish/sets/72157...
http://www.giveitfish.co.uk/Misc/20080411_scotweek...

There's some great camping up there too, especially further north where there are several sites overlooking lochs or the sea. Just watch out for midges and caravans - Spring or Autumn is best actually.

Have a good one!

Steve
