I've lived in Manchester most of my life, and I just can't think of any decent sized tunnels in the surrounding area that might prove useful for 'testing' a new exhaust.

Have I just not noticed any, or is there really nothing like that nearby?

Not very long, but try the tunnels approaching Wilmslow from the M56. They go under Manchester airport and as I recall Mr Ronaldo managed to crash a Ferrari in one - try not to do the same! I think it's the Hale junction.

There's two tunnels under the Mersey, but you've got to go to Liverpool for that.

The one under the runway at Manchester Airport is okay, but a bit short.

Other than the Airport, you'll have to go down the A55 to Conway, nice run out and no cameras at the moment. However don't join the 55 at the end of the M56 go via the M53 and join the 55 at Mold, much nicer (faster) route.

If you're in Manc then this is the best option, two decent sized tunnels, and a roundabout to turn around with... and the Bowler is just up the road for a timely pint afterwards. smile

Come off at J6 M56 (Hale), as suggested.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like Manchester Airport is my best option. It's certainly the closest.

The airport tunnels are OK for a 'test' but as you would expect, if there is any chance of someone doing 53MPH through them the BIB are usually in-between the tunnels to take your number, all in the name of safety of course wink (although having seen Ronaldo's hoon through maybe they have a point!

I test drove a DB9 through the airport tunnels when I was with a pal of mine who was car shopping. The daft fool ended up buying an SL500 in the end, but I remember the salesman saying 'just drop the window an inch' and then telling me to give it some beans through the tunnel. Still makes me smile now, just thinking about it...
