Think I remember someone on here being an expert on road surfaces and so I was hoping that I could be told why repairs are not sealed around the edges any more? All this seems to do is create more and more potholes as the edges break up and you end up getting long sections of rough tarmac damaging the car.
Cheers.

Patch repairs will have the vertical faces of the joint to the existing road sealed with bitumen, however some authorities don't like an overbanding strip around the top as it's a potential hazard to motorcyclists.
Current standards are very keen on sealing of joints as once water gets into the road structure it falls apart rapidy. Recent cold weather has shown what a bit of frost action does to the average undermaintained road.

Thanks for the info much appreciated
Is there any development for a repair sealant that wont be slippery for motorcyclists? Seems to obvious that the lack of it causes more holes and so the need for more money to be spent on temporary repairs that rarely last more than a month. Not having a go lol.

I suffered a puncture due to a deep pothole on an A road the other day (dark, raining, poorly-lit, in a slight dip and only illuminated by the headlights too late)
My local council seems to be blaming the recent cold weather for all its road problems.
Fair enough that frost accelerates a deterioration in damaged tarmac, but the roads have been in a shocking (& deteriorating) state for the 6 years that I've lived in this city....
At some point the government is going to have to do address the problem.
Local news mentioned that councils pay out more for compensation to motorists than they do on pothole repairs in a given year....
There really needs to be some forward-planning.

and why do they just throw gravel on top for us to bed in with our pride and joys instead of using a roller, when was the last time anyone saw a roller? am i getting old?
Yesterday down my crap street they used a roller and filled in all the potholes, and sealed them.Alot of councils just seem to dump gravel in though and just bugger off.
