Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?
Discussion
Just saw an e36 328i with the numberplate m3 jbl or something. I think this is worse than the badge - the plate probably cost the same as the car and with the money from both they could probably have been close to buying a real m3 evo. I see on average 2-3 different fake m3's per day though where I live so nothing unusual.

There is a similar one kicking around the north west. I was tempted to lean out the car and inform them that there was something wrong with their M5 as it was spewing black smoke everytime he changed gear - however, he was to quick to get away, guess he didn't want to chat to a fellow M5 driver about :-(This may be a pointless thread, but its funny.............

Anyway, the irony is that a lot of the cars I see with unmerited M badges would be better to drive than some of the clapped out M cars I see trundling around. The owners of the non-M cars don't even realise what you lot are so snobbish about. They see an old M3 and think that it's what is probably is: a much abused old banger. If you own a £3k M car with 120,000 miles, a load of modifications and seven previous owners can you really sneer at someone who, without understanding what 'M Power' actually is, has stuck an M badge on their 2012 320d?
And if it's the brand, the heritage, the history you care about, then save your breath. BMW doesn't care so why should you?

I can't help myself. It's like listening to the dick sitting at the next table in the pub. I try to ignore him, but I just have to hear what he's going to say next. If you don't like it, don't look!

Couldn't care about the heritage, it's a light hearted piss take out of wannabes who like sticking extra Halfords ///M badges on their non ///M car. Maracus said:

Is that a real M3? Slightly confused by the advert claiming it has 210 bhp and that it has "M3 wheels". What wheels would you expect an M3 to have?RichardM5 said:
There are 5 E36 M3's that say they have 210 bhp on PH classifies right now, looks like someone has made a typo and then others who know bugger all about the car have just used that info as a template. You'd have thought 4 Star Classics would know better!
It's a PH screw up, not advertiser screw up.And looking at the pictures of that car, it is an E36 M3.
Look at the engine bay, that's an S50B30.
My first time posting but came across this thread when I was checking on something else and wondered what your take on it would be:
So, I have a BMW 320D (now don't laugh this is what it says from the factory) M Sport
What this means is it is a 320D F30 sedan with the M Sport body kit, more aggressive bumper, grills, side skirts and wheels basically oh yes and an M Sport badge on the steering wheel and the kick plates. Now all of that is factory standard, it is a company lease car so before I just had a standard 320D but when my lease was being renewed they were doing this limited edition with the 8 speed auto M Sport package and flappy paddle gear shift for pretty much the same monthly lease price as a standard 320D so I thought why not The gearbox is epic I have to say and don't know how I will be able to go back to the 6 speed one when this lease is up.
So anyway it isn't an M3 but it is an 'M Sport' variant from the factory, but no other badges on the outside at all apart from the standard BMW ones and 320D on the back so I'm not trying to say it is something it is not if you get my drift, it's so easy to spot anyway with the single exhaust pipe so I don't know why people try to say their cars are M3 when it is so obvious it isn't.
Now... I had a bit of a knock on the front end and just got it back from the insurance approved repairer yesterday but it was in the dark and delivered to my work so I didn't have much of a chance to have a look around it and was just glad to get it back after running their Nissan Micra courtesy car into the ground for the past week and a half. Today I was looking to check the workmanship of the repair and paintwork and I noticed I am now sporting two additional M Sport wing badges on each of the front wings??? They weren't their before they took it for repair and I'm worried now that all you guys are going to put my photo up and ridicule me when it wasn't even me who did it :O
Would you send it back to them and make them take the badges off, I would do it myself but could damage the paintwork if the badges were stuck on while the paint was still soft. I didn't have new wings put on because the damage it went in for was only on the bumper but they had to 'blend' the paint on the wings apparently so not sure why on earth they put badges on that weren't there in the first place? Would you return it and have them removed out of principle is the question?
