Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a new watch and just looking for some advice. Previously I have owned a couple of fake breitlings paperbag Now I know that's going to wind you all and you'l probably judge me as a cheat or a fraud but please bear with me, I'm just being honest. I liked the way they looked and I liked the fact that they were cheap. £50-£100 isn't much so I wasn't too bothered when one broke and the other was taken off my wrist one night in Manchester.

However reading through posts on here I've realised there is a lot to be said for a watch made by a good manufacturer that you know will last, so I'm looking for something that looks good in the style of the latest £'ooo watches but that I can wear 24/7 with out worrying about weather it gets damaged or stolen etc.

My mum showed me a couple of Accurist and Rotary watches which to my suprise actualy looked nice. They are within a very reasonable price bracket, £60ish, look nice and have a 3 year warranty etc suggesting that they will be more reliable than a fake or replica. It also feels much more of an honest thing to do.

What are your thoughts? Would the reliability outweigh the looks? I know nobody is going to recomend the options i've used before but I'm just interested to hear your advice. Is it worth stretching another level to the £200-300 pound mark? (I'd love a real top brand watch but I can't justify the outlay and I'd be to worried about waring it to enjoy it going off past experience)

Thanks,

Adam

Rotary make some good looking watches, a lot of them are based on more expensive designs ;-) Personally, I'd be spending a little more money on a Seiko automatic. Still under 200 as well, I bought my Seiko Monster for just over £100.

See this thread for a Rotary discussion:

The trouble is for a lot of people is that Seiko Autos are not commonly available in most High Streets, so your only choice is to buy "unseen" (barring a photo) off the internet or make a trip to what could be a very far away dealer. They are great though, and I love mine (all 4 of them), but then I also love the 5 Rotary watches I have too...

I was in your situation. I don't know that much about watches, and don't have that much cash, but liked the style of expensive ones. I went for a Parnis (looks pricey but doesn't go a step too far in being a fake Breitling/Rolex etc).:

I only paid for it tonight so can't tell you if it's reliable or anything yet.

Will offer my 2p worth of advice - look at some of the internet only brands - specifically Steinhart. I have had them in the past and the quality is top notch - Swiss movements, german build quality and top notch customer service. Now, I realise it would be a leap of faith as they do not have any retail outlets anywhere in the world, but that is how they keep the prices down - like this magnificant piece of kit -

Ocean 1 Vintage Red - 320 Euros plus delivery -

or perhaps

Ocean 1 GMT - 390 Euros plus delivery -

All of the above can be found here - www.steinhart-watches.de

Just click on the Union Jack and translates the website into English. You could also look at www.timefactors.com - a lot of us over at TZUK have at least one of the watches from there, again top notch quality and excellent VFM.

Food for thought - let us know how you get on.
