Seems legitimate enough in principle. If you can claim asylum for religious or political persecution, then being gay in a country that would rather like to stone you seems equally as valid a reason for getting out of dodge.

"The Tory leader suggested that homosexuals should be allowed to stay in Britain if their lives would be put in danger were they sent home.
Under immigration rules, gay men are often sent back to countries with homophobic regimes - and advised to keep their sexuality a secret in case local police attack them."

What's wrong with that? Reasonable enough stance to take, surely.

Agreed, a tiny island like ours cannot be held responsible for the bigotry of other coutries.

I have nothing against poofs, my uncle was a poof (still is) when it was still illegal and an imprisonable offence. He coped.

Presumably they would have to prove they were gay, otherwise anyone would be allowed in so long as the mince around a bit.

Don't asylum seekers have a duty to claim asylum at the first border they cross? As the uk is still an island I can't see how people can fulfil that duty and still mince into the country?

The United Kingdom - because your country's problem, is our country's problem. Apparently.

I have to declare

"IRONY"

on this story.

There are so many gay british who live in fear of being outed as it will result in humiliation for them and their families.
Couple that with the greater number of gay people for some of the asian communities where the 'honour' based violence system is established; then we should perhaps be rescuing some of our own nationals from their families as much as we are offering asylum to others.

I guess this is in response to the possible new Ugandan law - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8412962.stm

Letting in one or two thousand refuges in nothing particularly if Cameron also introduces the pledged immigration limit.

It shows we care enough about the issue, have a bit of compassion. Obviously it's harder to prove homosexuality but if this was 1938 PH would be screaming that we couldn't afford to take any Jews as it would be too expensive (yay for Godwin's law).

I can imagine a room full of civil servants trying to devise a gay test. Now, Mr Bin Laden, We'll just connect these electrodes, and show you some pictures....

Don't asylum rules state you go to the nearest safe country?

Read the rest of the item, and one quote says it all-

I think we can look gay people in the eye and say: "You can now back us - because we now support gay equality".'

So it's just about winning votes then.

Because every single African who turns up here will just say I'm gay and we will have to give them asylum.
