For some reason I have an urge to listen to country style music, so far I have gone through the usuals I listen to anyways like the Eagles and Skynyrd, but I find myself drawn towards people like Jerry Reed, well I think Smokey and the Bandit did that to me many years ago, but now onto Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings.

Anyone got any recommendations?

And for those wondering, I have no idea where this came from and thank god I don't have a sister.

Merle Haggard, Don Williams, Doc Watson, Merle Travis and so many more.

Oh and most importantly in one word Cash.

Hank Williams III makes some great music.

Get yourself a copy of The Gram Parsons Anthology if you don't have it.

Alison Krauss, naturally. Emmylou Harris is always good. And I've got a weakness for the Dixie Chicks.

if you don't like cash, much of what I deem good country music won't be yo your tastes either. sounds like you're into 70s/80s stuff rather than earlier folk/spirituals influenced stuff or the 'i just shot my buddy for looking the wrong way at my favourite steer' songs.

try the byrds' 'sweetheart of the rodeo'

I hate country with a passion, Oh the years I was tortured in the back of my parents car listening to Glen fking Campbell, Johnny tw@tface Cash, Kenny Cun ting Rogers, and Hank thew@nk Williams.

banghead and my parents wonder why I grew up listening to Prog Rock and getting stoned outa my face to block out the dirge and depression of a fking cowboy singing to his hoss about how some slag of a saloon gal broke his bleeding heart.

I do like Big and Rich though

That's a Chameleons cover. The Chameleons version is a billion times better (albeit without the banjo).

Anyway, I think a lot of posts on this thread are referring to what I call Country AND Western. Country/Country Rock/Country Folk is where it's at wink

I'd give Bob Harris country show on Radio 2, Thursday nights a listen, ( or on iplayer anytime). A good mix of different types of country, you might hear something you like and can follow up.

reckon you've gotta work your way up to cash.

Give Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown a try, also check out an aussie band called the audreys and also the beautiful voice of Gillian Welch, her music will change your day.
