... and yet when the new model - with its newly designed far stiffer body (hence better handling and crash safety) - was roundly criticised by all the moronic punters because of its looks.

Well, the front look of the WRX highly begs for being crashed...

THis kind of thing really annoys me about car manufactures. Here we have a fantastic car for the price. Yet what do they do? put the most ugly body over it. Why,why, why???

ahem... its a sleeper. given the same amount of speeding drivers, I bet scoobies get pulled over less than any other car that quick. that, and, on a limited budget, given the target audience, aren't you glad that styling received so little of the development money? look how brilliant the car is dynamically? corners have to be cut sometimes. besides, an ugly car draws fewer secondhand customers. better for punters who want a pocket rocket but have small pockets.
would you rather it look better but drive poorly?

Of course I won't but ... it donesn't cost anything more to put a nice shaped body than an ugly one.

Why not just have stuck the old nose on it? it looked fine, and would have saved even more development cash

I'd still love a new sti though. But I'd rather have an EVO VII.
