hi all, as we all know, what the official mpg and realistic mpg figures are, bare no resemblance to each other. i hope to be getting an SLK 32. but as i am passed the age of wanting to be the car at the front of the queue, and wondering if i realy need that much power (yes you do, yes you do), anyway what realisticly would i be looking at from a 32 and as a fall back a 320 SLK.

hi guys, well i have kind of talked myself into getting a 32, and as its just realy a weekend car i can live with that mpg. i wont be getting anything untill may so i can take my time to look around, i will give the insurance company a phone to see what that will cost also.

I took detailed records on 3 individual €urotrips in 2008 and 2009 and averaged 27.1 mpg. That was including everything from Autobahn blasts to crawling slowly on icy roads, from short distance daily commuting to a drive across the Swabian hills.
When I first had my SLK320, I kept accurate records over 4 months of typical UK urban and rural use and averaged 27.7 mpg. But virtually none of that was on motorways. For the same pattern of driving with the SLK 32, I averaged 23.2 mpg.

The Achilles heel of the SLK32 AMG is the supercharger intercooler pump. When you buy your car, check whether the pump has been replaced. If buying from a MB dealer, don't let them bull$hit you about this not being an issue - it IS. But it's an easy fix.
The seat heaters are also prone to failure, but that's about it for common problems.
The '320 has a smoother automatic gearbox, because the AMG has the 'speedshift' transmission software which is quicker, but less comfortable.
Ride quality in the AMG is worse than that of the '320 - but performance is hugely better!

hi nick, i have read about the various possable areas of problems, as for the gearbox, i thought they were the same on both models of slk, is the 32 box stronger than the one in the 320, also how dose the speedshift work. i had an slk350 and that had the auto box but i could change to manual and change with the stick or the buttons on the wheel.

As far as I'm aware, the automatic gearbox is the same on both the SLK320 and the SLK32 AMG. The software is different in the '32 and the shift rate is 35% faster and less comfortable.
Hold the lever to the left and it will change down to the optimum gear for overtaking; plant your hoof and it will then take off like a thing possessed! Be prepared for flashing amber traction cautions though.
If you put your foot on the accelerator and try to move it gently to the floor, it's almost impossible to do so before reaching the national speed limit in the UK!

hi nick, they sound quite fun cars, i am looking forward to getting one, i have to wait untill may before i start looking. its a black one i would like to get, and it seems that was a popular colour so that might help me to find one. have to say the wait is killing me, and there was a black one for sale about 25 mls from me just a few weeks ago but its sold now.

I just bought a 230K this week - '99 with 21k miles. Its a weekend - third car.The problem with insurance was that the car is not that old, in insurance speak, and many were not interested in giving good quotes. However the best came from Peter Best - through Ecclesiastical - 3k a year limit and including breakdown. The amazing bit was the £50 excess compared to £350 everywhere else. And the cost was a mere £250.
