A few years ago I upgraded my partners Rolex and decided to sell her old watch on ebay.To cut a long story short I ended up selling it to somebody who gave me a stolen building society cheque as payment for the watch(it transpires that quite a few of these blank cheques were stolen at a break in at one of the building society in questions branches)
Obviously I reported it to the police and also contacted the Rolex lost/stolen register.
The person who took the watch had all the paperwork for it,certificate etc, even the original bill of sale.
I was wondering if anyone else who has lost a Rolex over the years has ever had their watch recovered by the Rolex lost/stolen register?Ive posted on other websites and although Ive come across plenty of people who have lost watches various ways, nobody Ive come across has ever had their watch returned by this service.

Great topic.
I'd imagine it would only get flagged up when the 'owner' sent it back for service'?
And then the questions would start: Did insurance co. pay out? If not, who was the legal owner? Did the new owner buy in good faith? etc, etc. I'm quite drunk and confabulating, but it is certainly a valid question.

A friend of mine had his taken off him saying it was stolen and returned to the original owner.

He bought this and just assumed it was legit.

Not his happiest day. I am not sure what became of that, is there anyway to protect yourself agaist such situations.

It also begs the question, why let it go before the cheque had cleared too. If youve been paid out on it by insurance it doesnt belong to you now anyway, its theirs..

I suppose you have to, or ask a dealer to check before purchase? Can you do this?

Yes, of course you can. You can also check with Rolex UK to check a potential purchase against their lost/stolen register.

Just to clarify-the watch wasn't insured, and the thief paid with a building society cheque(ie like a bankers draft),the cheque was genuine with watermarks and hologram however it was stolen so not legit.Over the years I have accepted hundreds of bank drafts and building society cheques for various things and released the goods immediately and never had a problem.

Needless to say I'm a bit more careful .nowardays....

A building society cheque is the same as any other cheque, it needs around 4-5 days to clear the funds and find its way into your account....you vitually gave the watch away. A very steep learning curve on that one.

Same for a bankers draft actually, it's still a cheque. 7 working days to clear and another working day in your account before it becomes the bank's problem rather than yours.

But back in the good old days when building societies were not banks, a building society cheque was perceived as good as cash. It was printed (or hand written ?) in the building society branch and processed by them as a cash withdrawl from your account - they would not produce it if funds were not available and the funds were taken from your account immediately into a holding account so impossible to bounce - the same goes with a bank counter issue cheque.

Unless the blank building society cheques are stolen - as with the OP - and then the system fails.
