I will be spending a couple of nights in Harrogate next weekend; I and Mrs Buddy have booked for dinner on the Saturday at the Drum & Monkey seafood restaurant as its one of our favourites.

Do any of you North Yorkshire lot have any recommendations for a good eating place that we can go to on the Friday.

Ta in Advanced.

Quantro on Royal Parade is very good indeed - went there whilst staying at the Hotel du Vin late last year - and just round the corner from your first choice too.

This was where Judas took me for my 40th. The hotel was lovely and the restaurant do a fabulous steak and chips.

B.e.D.

And if you want something a bit different ask for the chef's table in the kitchen.

The Orchid is wonderful. You can sample lots of dishes from The East and its repuation is very good. We ate there in October and were delighted.

Well in the end we went to Sasso on the Friday, we were very impressed the staff are very pleasant and friendly, the food and service fantastic. My wife thought the Risotto was the best she had ever eaten Ravioli was so fresh very very tasty, the cheese selection was brilliant. We will be going back.

Then we went to the Drum and Monkey on Saturday - oh dear, never again - Not a particular warm welcome on arrival no one offered to take our coats, we were seated upstairs right next to the very noisy serving area and very very close to the next table no chance of being moved even though there were empty tables.

Ordered our starters, mussels for my partner and Prawn roulade for me, after a longish wait our starters arrived and my roulade was stone cold never having had this dish before I asked whether or not it was supposed to be a cold (yes it was that cold), I was told no and they would replace my starter (no apology offered), after a very long wait (longer than the original order)my roulade appeared on the hottest plate I have ever encountered the sauce on the plate was boiling leaving a ring around the plate as it evaporated, the prawns and salmon (I hate salmon this was not mentioned on the menu) were dry and overcooked totally inedible, I think the chef may have been taking the p*ss.

So onto the mains, Halibut and Monkfish both very small portions served with no finesse the sauce just ladled over the top 4 very small slivers of mushroom in the brandy and mushroom sauce, not very appetising and not worth what they charge.

I think the place is living on its laurels it needs to update itself and move into the 21st century, given the excellent choice of modern restaurants now available in Harrogate we certainly won’t ever be going back, thats what we told the staff when we left and they did not seem to care.
