I've got an advisory from the TUV (MOT) that the RHS of the rack is moving slightly in its mounting and needs to be sorted. Is it a DIY job, is so where can I get the parts or must it go off somewhere? In my case it really would be "somewhere" as it's LHD.

If its just new bushes you need here you go

http://www.superflex.co.uk/partdata.php?searchbox=...

Or here http://www.tjmotorsport.co.uk/ if you need new alloy brackets (you'll need to ring)

The center section is a modified Chevette rack - the modifications are to the mounting arrangements which
are enhanced for strength and manufactured from Steel as opposed to the OEM aluminium. The bushes to connect
the center section to the track rods are Lotus and the track rods themselves are Ford (Cortina Mk3?).

There's been a few threads on these recently so try a search but also consider
Adrian Venn who might still do these at a reasonable cost

K wink

Kelly Bray Steering did mine. An excellent family run company used by most of the main dealers and garages in my area. They ship world wide as well. Worth giving them a ring if you can't find somewhere nearer to you.

Had a similar problem recently. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Found that the rack was adjustable inside and was an easy fix once opened up.

Thanks for all the replies. Off on holiday in Austria at the moment and will start taking things apart when I get back.

Paul description (if I read it correctly) describes the problem I had which was slight wear in the knuckle. This knuckle comes from a Lotus rack and is no longer available. Kelly Bray had to have one made as a one off. They also adjusted the shims which "tightened" the rack and made the feel more progressive, but if my reading is correct adjusting the shims as you describe will not rectify the issue of the knuckle.

BTW I had 2 MOTs (and about 5000 miles) with it as an advisory before I got it sorted, but checked it myself every few months for deterioration and to ensure it remained safe. Deterioration was so slow as to be imperceptible and I probably could have got away with it again this year but decided with the snow over the winter that that was the time to do it.

Total cost of my rack overhaul £75

Edited to correct price
