Hey all you Middle Eastern PHers!

I have been offered a contract to work in Tel Aviv for around a year. Now my initial thoughts were to jump on it, I'm sure to regret it later on if I don't, but I thought I'd seek advice from the endless well of knowledge that is PH first.

Has/does anyone live in Israel/Tel Aviv?

What is it like - obviously I'm aware of the history of the region, but from what I have read Tel Aviv is supposed to be a pretty safe city.

Obviously if I move I will spend most of my time in Tel Aviv, but while there it would be rude not to visit all the historical sights, and float in the Dead Sea. How safe is the rest of Israel for travelling around, and can I buy/rent a car with my UK licence?

I have thousands of questions - hope this has kept it pretty brief - but would be genuinely grateful if anyone has any experience they'd like to share thumbup

Not the most popular country amongst the rest of the Arab countries.

Hell, all (most) Contracts here strictly forbid you from having anything to do with Israel.

Tis about the biggest insult you can make over here. Think they would rather you were signing God save the Queen in your Union jack boxers and on your 10th pint of Stella in the Mosque.

Yep, same over here. If I went I would have to get a new passport to go and another one to get back into Libya. Shame as I quite like...that place.

Tel Aviv should be safe enough. The Hamas rockets can't reach Tel Aviv from Gaza!

Get a second passport so your travel around other Middle East countries is not restricted. I believe the UK Passport Office will permit a second passport on this basis.

I haven't spent anytime in Tel Aviv other than flying in and out on my way to Jerusalem in January 09 (during the Gaza conflict). I'm pretty sure it'll have a good social scene though.

Make the trip to Jerusalem if you can. It's an amazing place.

Cheers for the replies and advice - I'm leaving in 3 weeks and can't wait!

Will I be able to get into Egypt with my passport? As I really fancy a quick trip to the Pyramids while I'm there, would be rude not to!
