Well, its my brother's birthday next week, we'll go for a family meal one evening, default choice is probably the Running Horses, in Mickleham.

However, does anyone have any suggestions for anywhere a bit more interesting / different / left-field? Pub, restaurant, whatever? Between Kingston and Gatwick would be good...

Thanks in advance!

Does Surrey 'do' left-field? Not sure that it does.

You could try Drakes in Ripley, though be prepared to get your wallet out for dinner.

Of the pub offerings, IMHO the Running Horses is the best and most consistent. The Parrot in Forest Green also gets a look-in, although I think that's better in summer when you can sit outside.

The Dining Room in Reigate is good but not really leftfield.

I think you'd be better off going into London for something really different.

Bryce's Old School House in Ockley. Nice fish place. Cosy. Again, not left field though.

I've never been, but the smith-western always makes me smile for some reason. Boxhill so not far from the Running Horses. It's quite possibly rubbish, BUT it has been there a while and I think counts as left field smile

PS If you fancy coming closer to town, Richmond has a couple of decent eateries.

Maki do great Japanese food.

Rock n Rose has very variable food, but decent atmosphere.

There's a Belgian place in the town centre.

Depends what sort of grub you're after and how "posh" you want (none of the above are OTT).

Smith & Western is simply dire. Although it serves food 'all day', anything you eat in there will most likely have seen the light of several.

I think the reason it survives is because there is nowhere else within staggering distance for the local trailer trash to go.

Steaks / burgers / fajitas are awful, but the chicken wings and BBQ ribs are good.

It is worth the trip to marvel at the tackiness of the establishment and the shallowness of the local gene pool. There are some very strange people living on Box Hill... *cough*

Agreed, if you want burgers at Box Hill, stay at the bottom and get one at Rykas. Medium cheese for me. lick

I'll continue just to smile and drive pas then smile

Used to live at the bottom of Boxhill, so not exactly on it. Is there a "mobile home park" somewhere up top?

Loads. However you'd be amazed to see what estate agents consider to be a 2-bedroomed house in Tadworth.
