I realise this is probably an impossible question, but I've found a 2001 '51' plate Mercedes C32 AMG saloon, in Silver with 70,000 miles on the clock and Cat D registered. Currently it's for sale at £6,495 with a dealer, the damage has been repaired but it looks in need of some TLC.

Realistically, what sort of money would you offer for it?

Worth a punt at that I reckon. No way I'd offer over £6k for it that's for sure. They seem impossible to price. I tried We Buy Any Car and told them it had accident damage. They offered £3,950.

I understand that dealers would only take a punt at selling a cat D write off if they had managed to buy it for a dirt cheap price in the first place.

Perhaps they are slower to sell, and perhaps they are a bigger risk in terms of 'comeback' to the dealer, hence a decent margin. But that's their problem, not yours.

It sounds like quite a steep price so I would keep looking, but it's your call!

It's at least £1k cheaper than the next cheapest I've found which had 121k miles on the clock. Hold on, I'll find the listing.

As mentioned, it needs some work. I saw it advertised privately a few weeks back at £7,500 iirc. Seems they have taken it in part ex for a lot less to be offering it at that price.

Last year I was close to buying a 100k plus miler for £8k - straight and with a private plate....so I'd say you'd not want to give more than £5k for the car - depends of course on why it was written-off - couldn've been a minor knock that damaged AMG-specific (and thus very pricey) bits of kit.....in which case would be a smart buy at the right price...do they have any pix of the carpost-write-off but pre-repair?

I haven't asked as yet. By the sounds of it and reading the private sellers description, I think the accident damage may have been some time ago. The best thing I can do is call them, which I'll do tomorrow and try and figure out what exactly caused the damage. If necessary I can be at the dealers in an hour to have a look around it and make sure everything checks out.

My wife bought her seat leon cupra from that garage and the service and the car were both great!

That's not to say that all other cars would be as good, but it's a tick in the 'garage that I would trust' box, if that's of any use?
