Dammn you 2slo, those heron in flights shots are ridiculous !
I could do with some advice on shooting and post processing white birds.. I was shooting this Egret today and even after some heavy PP work with luminance masks I am not happy with the results. I tried underexpose for the whites...but there never seems to be any detail there.

Detail in bird feathers is a tricky thing - there is little or no latitude available which is why "serious" bird shooters have, historically, tended towards several thousand quids worth of kit and a lifetime of commitment to get "the shots".
But I'm no expert so I'll look to 2slo to provide the more complete answer.
More to the point - when did Flickr start to insert ads in people's photostreams? I thought I would scan back through a few of your frames and bloody ads kept popping up. Live spam! Shame on you Yahoo!!

It looks okay to me too, I've read various methods on how to shoot white birds, some of the experts swear by setting your metering on the surrounding grass etc. I've never had success with that, my approach is to meter the subject bird and expect to reduce EC by as much as it takes to give detail in the white feathers, typically 2 stops for something like an Egret or a Swan. This will of course make the surrounding shadow areas too dark but, assuming you haven't gone too far, the shadows can be lifted in pp whereas blown highlights can't be recovered. As to how much feather detail you can get, several variables here, light on the bird, distance to subject, ISO used, high enough shutter speed to negate motion blur and, as LQ says, the equipt used. I'm fortunate enough to shoot with two of Canons super tele's (the 300mm f/2.8 and the 500mm f/4) and if there are better lenses for birds, I haven't tried them. The good thing with Egrets and the like are that they often stand fairly still for some time allowing you to get off a few test shots, have a look at the histogram, adjust and repeat etc.
Pretty certain I've got the I.D. right, happy to be corrected if I am wrong though.

It's funny how life works out...I setup at a location, and was thinking to myself, pfff, nothing here not even a duck, oh well I will give it 10 mins, and then exactly 10 mins later this chap came flying in to provide a show.
