Gompo said: I am going to revisit various Neurosis albums as over the past 18 months or so I've become far more intereted in Sludge and Post Hardcore/Rock than previously. Of course Neurosis are quite different, but I feel I may be more open to their music. On the sludge front, this might be of interest? Free download via Bandcamp as well. MudbathAs for USBM...it's a weird beast. never really seems to have found its own sound for me, even as far back as GBK, Profanatica/Havohej and the like. Some interesting bands certainly, but somehow always felt derivative. That's probably true of Black Metal everywhere to be honest, but other places do seem have developed their own spin on it - thinking Greece, Oz and South America especially. ETA - another random sludge/doom find that works rather well - Clagg

Apart from Souls At Zero (which I think is great) I am fairly indifferent to Neurosis and while I know/like Streetcleaner I don't know much else from Godflesh. However, they're both legendary bands and I don't want to miss out on seeing them. A very heavy evening.. Exactly, one of those bills that comes around once in a blue moon. Songs of Love & Hate by Godflesh is well worth a listen as well. As for Neurosis, I'm a complete fanboy (as you may have noticed!) however everytime they've played live in this country since 95 I've managed to miss them so I'm particularly excited about this gig. Maybe we'll actually get to meet up for a beer this time! We should get Hornet and Tuscaneer (although i think it's the wrong end of the country for him) to come as well, we could set the world to rights on black metal, djent and cars! yeah, too far to travel for me mate....but i'd love to see godflesh "in the flesh" so to speak!!

New Sylosis album is great for anyone who hasn't heard it, another step forward for the band, Some awesome riffs and drumming. It got 5/5 in Terrorizer magazine which is pretty good. Nice to see a British band doing well.

Not really "proper" Metal, at the risk of sounding like a snob.

Ok, so when did Kreator put a new album out? Missed this one! Phantom AntichristOh look, a singer confident enough in his own voice that he doesn't need to resort to growl/clean/scream cliche. Hoorah! I'm so old and grumpy, haha

There's nothing wrong with them in the sense they're very well executed, but that itself is the problem for me (with a whole slew of current bands) - it's not his voice expressing itself, it's just him adopting a certain technique because, well, that's what's expected of a metal band now. I'd like to hear more of his own voice in there, even if it meant he wasn't quite so perfect on the growls and so on. All well and good being a "perfect screamer", but if everyone else is doing the same thing, what exactly does it add? Just drains that final something from the music for me. I always find myself comparing that approach to someone like Russ Anderson on Forbidden's recent Omega Wave, who just feels more alive. There's screaming and shouting galore, but it's HIS voice doing it. That Kreator vid is another good example. The vocals aren't as technically difficult as Sylosis, but they just have that much more emotion for me. Maybe I'm living in the past, but the metalcore style stuff bores the s t out of me. No passion to it!

The new "Down" album/EP arrived in the post yesterday.
Gave it a listen this morning on the way into work. Severely disappointed. It sounds almost like the same song 6 times. Nothing exciting going on in there, was hoping for something much better. I'll give it another listen later on, but really not impressed.

ETA - another random sludge/doom find that works rather well - ClaggWith regards to USBM, I agree to some extent. There was bandwagon jumping and they never quite established a proper movement, in part because they were late on the scene and perhaps almost too much interest/competition once things got going. I guess a little like Death Metal with a Florida crew and then the NY scene etc. There's still collectives coming about, 'Red Anarchist' BM being one, which does include some decent acts that seems to have been formed in the last few years. I mention them too much on this thread anyway but Absu and Inquisition are still my favourite US-exports with regards to BM. An acquired taste perhaps, and again two bands that stand on their own. Thank for the recommendations on the Sludge, finally got around to listening to them both. Both tracks listenable although they're missing something for my particular taste, sounds almost too stripped down for me. At the moment the Black/Sludge I am listening to often has quite a lot of Hardcore/Post-Hardcore in there too. I guess that can kind of follow onto this, a new album I've enjoyed in the past few days. This track is basically Post-Hardcore but other styles are present on the album: Planks - An Exorcism of SortsHere's another that's not a million miles away, another good album with a PH tinged band name: General Lee - Medusa Howls with Wolves

They were really good, great to see them in such a small venue.

Just got the new Devin Townsend album and that is an absolute cracker. "Save Our Now" is a highlight for me but the whole thing (bar the slightly quirky opening couple of tracks - This is Devin we're talking about, afterall) is just epic and uplifting and generally awesome. Also, I don't think it's possible to have a kick drum any louder in the mix than on this album. And then this came out today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQugakeqVYA
