Maybe rephrase the question: any good driving roads in South Wales?
There are loads (probably too many to list) but the direct route to Pembroke is as you say the M4.One way if you fancey a slight (lol) divert is to head up on A470 (boring dual carriageway I'm afraid) from junction 32 M4 towards Brecon, take the left at Merthyr Tydfil (before single carriageway part of A470 (itself a nice road) onto A465 towards Hirwaun and then onto A4059 (which is one of Top Gears road) which will bring you back onto the A470. carry on A470 past Storey Arms (walking station and biker stop futher down road) Take a left on to A4215 towards Defynnog, then A40 which takes you towards Llandovery and will take you all the way to Pembroke. A little detour from Llandovery is the A4069 (Top Gear bend) Black Mountain road which will bring you down to the A48 via A483 onwards to Pembroke (so basically you would miss the M4 from Junction 32 to the end where the A48 takes over. There are some more roads down there if you wanted to miss the A48 dual carriageway as well but you may have had enough by then.
Most interesting way would be A40 all the way. No point in M4 to Wales then finding an alternate route through Wales as because of the valleys you'll be heading due North for a while when you're nearly at your destination.
Far better to leave London on the M40 then take the A40 west as far as you want to go. It's a great road when you hit Wales.
