What do you do when the waiter brings an open bottle to the table?

As above, send it back. End of negotiations.

Alot of places abroad do this. They have usually been serving cheap wine out of the same bottle for months...

Cool thanks. I had a cheap Medoc last night (was already a bit drunk so no point spending much!) and it was open. It was also vile. Not off or anything but just really cheap plonk. Need to suck a chilli whilst downing it kind of flavour.

yes This may have happened over here in the past, one reason why I wouldn't order a carafe of wine. How do you know it isn't filled with left overs fom unfinished bottles?

Unfinished wine? Really?

I cant think of a single bottle of wine I have ever left unfinished at a restaurant. If we are paying over the odds for it, Im gonna bloody well finish it.

What a bargain, that means I get a sample of the more expensive bottles for the cheaper price of the carafe... I love the Merlot Bordeaux Chianti red smile

The bigger issue is leftovers from peoples glasses....
If you think unscroupulous restaurant owners don't do it occasionally, think again.
Be weary of opened bottles of wine. A bottle should ALWAYS be opened in front of the customer.

To all those who say "Send it Back" do you not think that you're making it pretty clear to the waiter that you don't trust him? He may find that insulting and add his own 'special ingredients' to your mains?

'House wine' often comes open - they'll be filling bottles from a 100 gallon drum out the back to order.

A lot of supposition on this thread. If I was served an open bottle I would send it back, no question. But as for the rest? Do you really think people can be arsed to collect dregs and re-serve them when house wine can cost <£2 a litre?

Depends where I am eating but if I don't know them I will order ahead if it is a decent wine. Some places (very few, 5*+) will have bottles ready and others just decant and re-bottle. The "let it breathe" philosophy is one I personally subscribe to but there are other methods used to mellow a wine.
