Wakefield - John O'Groats...
Discussion
...epic road trip this Friday (in a Laguna2 :-) ).
Is it really over 10hrs as the routeplanners indicate?
I do the Scottish borders regularly, as SWMBO has friends and family there. Can "do" Edinbugh in about 3 3/4hrs. Surely it's not another 6hrs up to the top???
Are the road upwards really so restrictive? Anyone?

I'm afraid it is roughly 6 hours from Edinburgh to the top sticking to the NSL.
I used to do Edinburgh to Inverness in 3 hours in a Transit van when the roads were quietish. If we left work a bit later and got on the road at a busy time we were looking at 5 hours some fridays.
To be honest you would be better not bothering with John O'Groats because there's fk all there anyway. Then again i used to live not too far from it so my opinion may differ a bit from yours i suppose.

I have heard it is possible to do edinburgh to thurso in 4.5 hours so adding another half hour to get you to JOG it is still only 5 hours.
Just remember to behave yourself until you are over the bridge at Inverness.
I'd wait till you were over the bridge at the Dornoch Firth (north of Tain) and also watch out in Caithness Latheron north to Wick Just remember to behave yourself until you are over the bridge at Inverness.
Depending what time of day and what day of the week you are doing the trip, the time from Edinburgh north can be 6 hours, often less though
you were bloody right!
did it as 2 drivers up, 10hrs there, "edinburgh" m1-a1-a698-a68-a7-bridge-a9; and solo run 8hrs back, "glasgow" a9-a80-m8-a74-m6-m62.
got down to inverness footy ground in about 2hrs on the way back, t'was a clear run with no traffic...
lots of cycles and "fun run" cars up there - saw a parade of 4 new vw beetles in convoy and some sheds - mondeo / punto etc doing the end to end presumably. hi if you're on here and good luck.
also lots of police last night on the a9 on the way down; like shooting fish in a barrel on that 85 mile long 60mph stretch i suppose.
had a roadblock / checkpoint on both sides near wick, examining cars closely - was like the cannonball run!
cheers for all warnings / advice etc. useful stuff.
oh, and the laguna behaved as well, there are some good ones out there...
