A couple of years ago my Mrs and I had a fantastic road trip from the UK to Malcesine for a relatives wedding. We're now planning to return to Lake Garda later this month for the Christening of the daughter of the couple who got hitched, but we're wanting to take a different route.

Last time we took the following indirect route over 4 days:

Liverpool -> Dover -> Calais -> Honfleur -> Mont St Michel -> Chambord, Loir-et-Cher -> Dijon -> Geneva -> Milan -> Malcesine

The return was much more direct, taking only 2 days:

Malcesine -> Innsbruck -> Tübingen -> Zeebrugge

This time around we have our 16 month old daughter with us, so I'm looking for a touristy route which will allow us to travel to Malcesine within a comfortable 3-4 days.

Can anybody recommend a good route, and any villages we should look to stay?

Journey to be taken in my 535d on or around 23rd May smile

Well, the part from Mont StMichel to Chambord I can help with.

From MSM go to nearby Dinan, the old town great and very pretty, if you want to eat then there is an absolutely superb restaurant call Le Cottage down on the quay, stunning food.

Between there is LeMans and some wonderful countryside.

Chambord.

The nearby town of Blois is wonderful, you can visit the House of the Magician, where a huge Dragon appears out the windows at certain chimes of the clock, Blois has a Palace well worth visiting.

The river viewed from the old battlements looks fab and unless you have a reason to stay in Chambord, Blois has some of the best restaurants [lunch and evening] in the area. I know one in particular but don't remember the name, where iot is yes, name no.

As you leave Blois head toward Bourges, the town is OK, but the roads through the forest on a sunny day will blow you away, it is where [apparently] some of the forest scenes from Day of the Jackal were filmed, where he re-sprayed the Alfa I think.

The drives in that area just knock-out, empty roads, great surfaces and wonderful sight lines.

From there I'm sure there are people on here with direct local knowledge of the areas.

I and dozens of Brits hit Blois regularly every summer, you'll see why!

Cheers smile

The MSM -> Chambord route is the one we took last year but, though very nice, I'd like to take a totally different route this time around smile

Any other recommendations gratefully received.
