Need some advice, haven't raced on List 1b for over 5 years and need to buy some tyres, car is a caterham CSR around 560Kgg, 13" x 7" front and 9" rears, what's the best outright tyre for dry and wet grip, needs to last 1x40min race only so longevity is not a consideration, outright performance is, anyone have any informed opinions?

I've run Yoko A048s on a similar car with good results, friends run Kumho V70As and again are very happy smile

Avon ACB 10's are very popular with the Caterham boys for sprints and hill climbs.

Kumho's are on the list, ideally i need a 205 or 215 front and 235 or 245 rear, don't believe Yoko or Toyo make one in 13" so that might limit my options, I'm also told that Kumho's are proving difficult to get hold of, anyone know any good sources, I know Camskill sell them

You going to race mag 7's? I think v70s are the choice at the moment. May see you at oulton if you're there.

yep I am, will be at Oulton so come and say hi, Kumho's look to be the way to go given the size issue, just need to find some now!

The quickest CSR at Snett was on Kumho,s, the quickest R400 was on Avon ZZR,s, similar results throughout last season althought the R400,s ran on CR500,s before the new ZZR became available. These results were in the dry, not quite sure what Nigel runs in the wet.

Good luck what ever you run on, good set of chaps to race with

cheers Peter, Nigel has been very helpful and advised of what he runs so Kumho's do look like the way to go, i have raced on them before in Kumho BMW but the hard compound and a car with 3/4 the power and double the weight.........problem with ZZR seems to be the rears, 215's only which are probably a bit narrow for a 9" rim and our power .......really looking forward to getting out next weekend, been a long time coming

Incidentally, does anyone buff their tyres?

I dont think its necassary to buff list 1b's to be honest as they dont start with much tread anyhow well at least the ones I have tried Toyos and Kumhos.

Soft/supersoft Kumho V70A are the 1st choice for sprint/hillclimb cars. I have never raced so can't directly comment but I do trackdays in my 226bhp car as well as sprints/hillclimbs and use a set of hard compound V70As for track work. I was told by some of my fellow competitors that the medium compound goes off after half a dozen laps - just something to bear in mind.

I have a set of medium compound ones I used on my Chevy and yes they are too soft and will go off and wear very quickly but it is a 1300+ Kilo car.
