Hi all,

Well I should be joining you all within the next two weeks now that I have labour approval(assuming the ash doesn't return)

I understand its worth getting VPN before landing, if anyone has a provider they can recommend that would be great, either on here or via a PM if thats better ?

Ahh also if there is anything else you can think of that is worth setting up here before departing you can think of from experience it would be appreciated

See you soon
Cheers

Vote for Labour - just to fk everybody else up for a few years so that your tax free savings go further when you go home.

Get Skype loaded up on your laptop as they try and block it here and it's very useful I'm told.

Sort out all of you UK based commitments as best you can; esp. heavy stuff like tax and finance as the delay in mail can be frustrating if you don't have an online option which is the case with HMRC.

Go to a pub, with a good english newspaper and enjoy a couple of quiet pints of ale, something called Badgers Arse or the like.

Spend time outdoors, preferably rolling around in lush green grass as this will be off limits for most of the next four months.

Swear in public, a lot as that is largely off limits. Make massive wker signs to anyone who offends you whilst driving as that is off limits here too.

Load up your ipod with all of the latest cool albums because you will find yourself out of touch with anything that isn't annoying and sung in an american accent here, even if it isn't being sung by americans.

Go for a hoon, hell go for several and delight in the joy that only a series of connected sweeping corners with changes in camber and elevation can bring.

Bin all of your warm clothes, don't bring a coat 'just in case' or try to store them at a relatives. Bin them and enjoy it!

Aaaaah. That was quite cathartic!

Mate, that's fantastic!

OP, bottle of JD and Gin please....the blue bottle.
Unless you have an employer who is going to bend over backwards to do all they can for you, you will become severely frustrated with everything you try and do here...it's like banging your head against a brick wall. remember to post on here any help you need...it'll save you so much grief!

Congratulations!! Another PH'er on the way! smile

I, well I say me but my old man set up my voluntary NI contribution to keep that going while I’m away, supposed to transfer some money over each month but due to the wonderful way things tend to work over here that hasn't happened yet! Still waiting for HSBC here in Bahrain to sort my internet banking out! Before i left the UK i asked HSBC if they could set up a account for me over here and they said yes but it would cost me 100 quid, I told them to stuff it I'll do it myself..... wishing I had paid the 100 quid now as saved myself the hassle here.

Also get your fill of pg 3, nuts, zoo, FHM, Loaded, or any other mag you can safely leave round the house with top heavy lovelies and Megan Fox in her smalls as once they hit these shores all those pages disappear or end up on the receiving end of a big black permanent marker!! frown

Oh and not to pee on any ones bonfire but I heard the ash cloud is back on the news this morning..!??

And one more thing, the last time you get petrol before you leave do it with a big smug grin knowing that soon it will cost you less than water, maybe tell the person next to you just to rub it in a bit! hehe

Is the Fish and Chip place in JBR still open? Although pricey, I seem to remember that it was not bad. Haven't been in ages though.

I believe so, I thought it was awful the one and only time I went, the chips were like apples!!

Best I have had so far is in the Crown and Lion in the Byblos hotel (TECOM C)

I got my VPN from Strong VPN and would recommend it. I had to pay for it but it's well worth it as the free ones are unreliabe (in my experience) and you cant access most of the proxy sites out here.

Send that form to HMRC to tell them you're leaving the country... I got a few quid back from them!

Don't they have plans to start taxing UK expats?

Otherwise, do everything already mentioned in this thread and try to bring about 16 passport photos with you. smile

why? by the time you retire all that money will have been pissed up the wall and the state pension will be non-existent/worthless - better to save (or spend) that moey yourself that entrust it to the government

oh, and you can't get sandwich spread over here either

Thanks for all the comments especially the ones about the badgers lol

Certainly hope to get something back from the taxman for a change !!!!!!

Had a look at stong VPN and they seem to be doing some reasonable offers so will give that a go before heading out.

£7 for a pack of bacon !!!!! I will bring a suitcase full, so if anyone fancies a pack for £6 let me know :-)
