Something I'd never considered doing before this week.

Microwaving marmite (briefly) to make it easier to spread on heavily buttered white toast.

Been there, spent hours in A&E with my hand in the air waiting for the damn bleeding to stop.

The mandolin is very effective yet extremely deadly. Shaved finger is a delicacy in some areas.

I feel your pain. If I may take advantage of your thread to add another very recently acquired tip - never, ever put a whole scotch egg in your microwave for more than 2 minutes unless you have a penchant for microwave cleaning

Or any Global after 3 beers! My left index finger nail took nearly 3 months to fully regrow after I missed with a medium vegetable chopper!

The dutch have a penchant for drinking hot milk. One of my colleagues heated his usual evening mug of milk in the microwave. It boiled over. It was then that he discovered that the milk was off.

Also, don't leave half a casserole of stew in the fridge and then leave the country for a month.

Don't wash up, a wine glass breaking caused me four hours in A%E getting stiched.

Bummer about the finger; not much you can do now. I prefer a sharp knife for precisely that reason.

On a more positive note, do keep a full bag of frozen peas, no matter how old. When you grab a steel pan handle straight out of the oven, skip the (useless) cold water tap, grab the bag, and hold it against the burn until you are genuinely worried about frostbite. Let go, shake limb, and re-apply. Repeat. hth.
