A few questions squire, if you don't mind?

Firstly, have you read much about Adam Perry Lang, the famous American barbecue Daddy? I've just ordered his latest book and I've got the bug ready for summer.

Secondly, which barbecue should I buy for £200ish that I can use to smoke things with as well as grill?

Thanks.

I saw Jamie Oliver recommend Adam's website the other day via his twitter feed. It does look good but having flicked through his site, a lot of the stuff is (obviously) very American. Some of the sauces and ingredients I think you'd struggle to get in the UK.

Regarding the barbie, what about a standard big (57cm) weber kettle (one touch). I use mine for smoking and grilling. It works very well. I've yet to try a really big cut of meat aside from baby back ribs & spatched chicken on it yet but I reckon it'd do the job pretty well assuming I can suss out coal & vent control.

I'd love to be able to buy a smokey mountain a la Andy but at 350 knicker, the Mrs would have a fit.

Had a Weber one touch for about 4 years now, great bit of kit, even cook the Christmas day Roast on it smile

I also looked at a Smokey Mountain, but was advised by a dealer that, they are not very neihbour friendly, as they do smoke a lot smile

Sir,

Thanks for asking, always a pleasure to share my opinions.

I am familiar, and a big fan of APL, and another guy called Steven Raichlen. Both know their way around a pit.

As for the BBQ, the Weber Smokey Mountain for sure. You can smoke on a kettle, but it a WSM is designated for it. With that comes acute temperature control, and plenty of other features (water bowl, 2 cooking decks etc) which will make your life much easier. The WSM will hold good smoking temperature for several hours without too much work.

Just shout if you want to know more! There are a couple of folk on here who are proud WSM owners who I'm sure will happily talk you through..

I recently bought the Weber One Touch premium after much deliberation.

My first effort at slow cooking. Followed the Papoo recipe with rub and glaze etc and then 2-2-1 method.

Maintaining the temp was a struggle mainly cos it was getting too hot...

Thanks guys. I will be reading around the subject for a few weeks yet before making my purchase.

The ribs look excellent by the way.

They were done using the indirect method. Although it renders the grill out of action.

Maybe 2 x Weber one touch. One slow cooking and the other to grill.

So was the dealer I spoke too, talking rubbish about smoke from the WSM, or is it not that bad?

What do you think of this as an alternative to the WSM?

Not bad for £145? Or there is a slightly larger one made of heavier gauge material for £199.

Looks very similar so in theory it should prove the same results. The only thing I would be concerned about would be the temp gauge being accurate and does it keep the heat in, ie thickness. Worth a shot at that price.

hehe Nice approach! I'm sure she does the same to me about all the clothes she buys though... "this pair of jeans cost just over a tenner..."

Well, I've gone and done it. Ordered, should be delivered tomorrow. The manufacturers have been very helpful and even thrown in some 'free' wood chips for me to try.

I'll set it up and post some pictures over the next few weeks.
