I've wanted to own a Steel Rolex submariner with date for some years now. Yesterday I received some news that means there's cash money available so that I can start looking for one. I'm quite happy to buy used (pre-owned?) but need just a few pointers from you chaps here.

I think a 16610 is what I'm after, but are there any different model types to look out for which are more or less desirable? Can anyone recomend any sites that will tell me all I need to know? Is the date Sub the most desirable against a non-date?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I've not been in a position to buy until now, so have not researched fully. Any sensible info would be appreciated, thanks.

ETA: The Sub I buy will be for wearing, rather than for any sort of investment purpose so I'd rather steer clear of a model type whose price is loaded due to relative rarity etc.

Just bought one myself last month.

The 16610 version was introduced in 1989 (replacing the previous 16800 version) and has remained pretty much unchanged until production ends very soon with the new one having been announced (if it hasn't ended production already?)
So any 16610 from the last 20 years will be pretty much the same. The only variation has been the ltd production 16610LV with the green bezel/maxi dial that was introduced in 2003 for the 50th Anniversary of the Sub.

As to date/non-date. It's a personal preference. I spent a good while deliberating over the two before going for the date, purely on the grounds of the newer design bracelet of the 16610 date-sub, which better suited my slimmer wrists as the link configuration is very slightly different allowing the clasp to be more central on a slim wrist.

Am aware of the LV with green dial - wearing a J Springs right now which has something similar. Didn't realise the 16610 had been around so long though. Thanks so far.

If you want a date, but dislike the cyclops (as many do), then why not try a Sea Dweller. Nicer, and rarer than a Sub (IMHO). I had an LV for a short period, but the one-eye really bugged me. Now have a V-series SD, and the only thing I would change it for would be a vintage SD.

Fair point re cyclops, but for me it's part of the appeal. Bit of a Rolex 'signature' I suppose.
