ADAC European breakdown cover - info

I was looking around for European breakdown cover and ADAC (effectively the German AA) got mentioned a few times but I found it a bit difficult to find info on how to join etc. So, here's a bit of info on how it was done in the hope that it's useful for people doing searches in the future.
The English page of the ADAC website is:

The membership appropriate for UK drivers is the Plus membership, which gives UK and European breakdown cover and is on the driver, irrespective of the car you're in - a great plus point for older cars. Cost is EUR 79.50 for a year. In contrast the AA quoted me £90 for a week's European cover on an 18 year old car....
On the website above there's a (German - +49) phone number to call but I was told by the operator to send an email to request membership so that there is no confusion about taking down UK address details. So, send an email to service@adac.de.
In the email, mention that you want to take out Plus membership, the date to start, your name and address.
You should get an email back in about a week advising your membership number and requesting payment - you'll need to fax back your card details for that (payment won't be accepted over the phone or by email). If you need your membership sooner like I did, send another email to the address above asking for ADAC to confirm your membership number.
Membership documents will also come in the post.

No, it was when I got into the Ts and Cs for the policy that the age of car i had was not covered. Although this was single trip cover with them. I have never told them about any of my cars, only ever given them the details of the one I want them to come and pick up/fix

Most yearly policies do have an age limit im my experience so maybe worth a double check!

Just spotted this as im looking to renew. Im with the RAC blue badge scheme at the moment, which I have to say has been worth its weight in gold, but they want £120 off me to renew, which seems expensive to say the least.
Looking at ADAC's website, it seems to be about 33 euros and covers me in europe, where as the RAC want an extra £50 to cover me in Europe for 5 days

My tale of the ADAC. Took out membership and paid via bank transfer. Drove through Europe did't need the cover luckily. Got back and had a problem, called them the AA came out. At the end of the cover start getting letters in German, thought they were requesting renewal fees. I emailed them telling them I no longer required cover, got another email in german which I google translated and it transpires they are denying receiving the membership fees and want me to pay for the callout.
Subsequent solicitors letters from Germany, in German again, bump up what I owe them.
In summary membership is great, just make sure you can read German if they write to you.

been with ADAC for a couple of years and called them twice with excellent service both times (on different vehicles) ignition barrel collapsed while on my drive and the other a 90 mile recovery on a flat bed
they speak excellent english, initially a call to Germany then they route you to their French HQ, they are partenered with the AA in the UK. Highly recommended !

When I looked into this a yr or so ago the problem with the ADAC is they will only tow you (IIRC) 50 miles if you break down in the UK.
If I'm close to home I'll fix it or get a mate to come out - when I want the cover is when I'm bloody miles away from anywhere.
Whilst I've never actually needed such cover it seems pointless to have such limited cover.
However (IIRC) if you break down in Europe they will repatriate the car as long as they deem its worth more than the cost of recovery.

Thanks. So it still makes sense to take out ADAC for long Euro mainland trips in addition to your normal UK cover.If I'm close to home I'll fix it or get a mate to come out - when I want the cover is when I'm bloody miles away from anywhere.
