Hi I don't know if this has been covered before but here goes.

I live on the Essex Suffolk border and last summer they re-surfaced a road that I use every day on my daily drive to work. In my opinion it didn't need doing at all, just a few large patches.

They were really quick - couple of days for about 8miles of B road.

The road in question is between Bulmer and Hedingham. When they finished they left the 20mph signs up and the chippings hazard signs. I thought they were gonna come back to put a smooth top layer on a couple of days later......they haven't!
The road is still rough in texture (a bit like the anti skid stuff thet put down on approach to pedestrian crossings), small chippings still cover the road and gather at the side.

Also in the corners the crappy rough surface is coming off. I can't help thinking in the winter the road is going to pot hole like a mother!!

They now seem to be using this more often in my area. in the last 6 months they have done the Earls colne to Bures road. The Lamarsh to Sudbury road. The A120 Coggeshall juct to Earls Colne road and a part of the Hedingham to Halsted road. I have not seen it used anywhere else in the country.

what is going on??? why are they leaving this surface down, why are they not putting a smooth, quiet top layer down? It only seems to be B roads that they are putting it on. But roads that don't really need a full re-surface, just patch ups will be fine.

At the risk of sounding like my dad.... it can't be any good for tyre wear can it? Stones get thrown up from passing cars and trucks even now upto 12 months after it was laid. I have some pretty big chips in my paintwork from it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this rant. Any info on this would be much appreciated.

They probably think the noisier surface will make drivers slow down, but all it will do is reduce grip and send drivers who have been doing certain corners at 60mph into ditches instead.

There was nothing wrong with the A120 to Earls Colne road (B1024) last time I drove down it.

They've probably not got the budget to do a proper strip & relay of a proper substrate & surface, and are probably just doing a tar & gravel quick 'pretty up' for the look of it.

This sounds like another lash up by the counties dodgy contractor, they dont normally even put up legal signage. Be lucky if it lasts six months. Someone in Essex County council is on the take and the contractor gets away with it at the tax payers extent. I created a dossier with photographic evidence last year, counties highways department werent interested and wouldnt discuss it.

There's loads of that crap down this way (surrey) Seems to only last a couple of years and then they resurface it all over again, leaving the main roads with ever increasing potholes. Madness.

I'm quite sure this is the cheap fix method that was in another thread on here, apparently it extends the life of the road without having to completely resurface it. A member on here emailed the highways dept of their local council and that's the answer they got.

I agree. .. round our way all the B roads are all now like it, they have evn gone as far as surfacing the safer dirt roads that were driven on by tractors ( around kings lynn )

It is madness when you have a F***** huge tractor coming off of a field onto the road at 20mph, i've had 2 chips since January (thank heavens Auto glass is free on my policy)

Yes it is a cheap alternative but it is causing insurers hell i bet.

Its the way they do it now, pour tar and chippings, and let the cars roll it smooth.

In reality what happens is you end up with no paint on your car and the chippings get flicked off or crumble up until the original (smooth) surface is back, with a bit of tar and chipping dust in the odd few gaps!

Thats what your £200-£500 car tax pays for, well that and the 3 billion speed bumps they put everywhere!

They`ve just done this on some roads around Beaulieu.. the result paint chips all over my alfa, and a cracked windscreen on the volvo. ffs. Even if you crawl along, some cockjockey in a works van will come barrelling along the other way, spraying all the other cars with shrapnel..
