Can anyone recommend me a good PR company that my wife can use with her new business, which is an internet based food-service company aimed squarely at middle England's housewives? We need coverage in something like the Femail section of the Daily Mail and similar.
Speak to Carl at Bryher Business PartnershipHe's ex-Fleet St. and will be able to help.
This particular one, to have them on retainer charge £450 per day with a minimum 4 days a month. For that you I believe you get 2 stories/releases created, sent to relevant publications and reporting.
I'm going for their launch package, which is £1450. Which consists of a launch release and then one further story/release.
From speaking to a couple of companies this seems to be a standard rate. Though a lot of companies I spoke to just wanted to write a story and stick it up on websites like PRlink, in the hope journalists would pick it up. The company I'm using target specific journalists and publications and have got some impressive coverage for their clients.

Try Jo Swann of Chocolate PR they have offices in London and Leeds and take a different approach to most PR companies. Jo's background spans both the traditional media and online so she understands how the 2 work together.
They've had articles in the Daily Mail before as well as the women's glossies for online lifestyle businesses.
They work on the targeted approach rather than just blasting out a press release in the hope its picked up, with personalised contact with key journalists. They won't invoice if no coverage is gained but this isn't likely as they regularly produce coverage far in excess of expectations. I'm not a client myself but I do know several of their clients and they are all happy.
As for guideline prices Ive asked Jo and she said that the prices above are about the level of budget required but it's important to understand exactly what you're getting for that spend. They break down all activity to the hour to show how each pound of your budget is spent. Worth looking into as an alternative...
OP I'll send you Jo's mobile by PM

My wife is speaking to four PR companies (two from here and two recommended by other sources) as they seem to have similar clients to her business, www.menus4mums.co.uk
I'll report back.
Many thanks for your help and we will of course, tell them who recommended us.

Feedback:
My wife is using 'cerub pr' in High Wycombe and Menus4mums has already been mentioned in the Independent:

Lets hope she can keep up the momentum!
