I have a 2009 S40 D5 and I am considering having it re-mapped/chipped for the obvious better performance and economy. Does anyone have any experience of having their's done and what company/products they would recommend?

It seems that MTE are the people to go for, although BSR and Rica do offer alternatives. This is only based of other peoples reviews. Do not be tempted by HLM.

Get onto t5d5.org and ask around. People may be a bit blunt, but there is some fantastic advice on there accompanied by very knowledgeable people. smile

I'm sure I remember reading (a while ago) about Vovlo themselves offering remaps now...although I think that was for the new V70...but it's worth checking out. I posted something on here about it, but don't have the time to search for it at the moment

Many thanks for the help guys. I'll also give my local Volvo dealer a try to see what they offer if anything, then decide. And thanks for the link to t5d5.org, I never knew it existed. Now saved in my favourites.

Not done the re-map yet. Car has to go into the dealership next week for a recall. Apparently there are 3 recalls to do and one of them involves a software upgrade. Perhaps it is a good thing that I hadn't done it already or else it would probably have wiped out the re-map! I have been doing a bit of research mind you and have come across another company called ECU Remapping Services (ECU-RS). They seem to offer good value in that their re-map only costs £250 or so and a technician visits you to do it. They also offer a 14 day money back guarantee. Will also ask the dealer on Tuesday when I go in, to see what they offer if anything.

Unfortunately the UK market is odd that price always outweighs quality.

I promise you, MTE is the way to go.

Agreed, go with recommendations.

Many have tried and failed to tune the D5 successfully.

Make sure who ever tunes it properly inspects your car. Not just a drive up the road for two minutes and back.

Trying to save in the short term could cost you a new engine in the long. Learn from others lessons, they are on the various Volvo forum boards.

Also if you do remap it, make sure the oil changes are more frequent is the single bit of advice usually offered.

Thanks for the advice guys. This is why I have posted the question, to get everyone's experiences and recommendations first before going ahead.

I will check out MTE, but being from the north of Scotland, I need to make sure I can get "local" back up if anything goes wrong.

Will keep you posted.

So why do you guys recommend MTE, is it price/performance/service?

I have a 2008 S40 D5 which has a RICA sport map allegedly giving 253hp & 548nm torque - I'd be surprised if it's actually giving that, but it's got tons of power, smooth delivery and better fuel economy so it always brings a smile to my face.

Did have some problems initially with occassional power loss - you would floor it and nothing would happen and it would take about 30 seconds for the power to come back full on. However, RICA addressed the problem immediately and it's been fine since.

so what sort of MPG do you get from a 253bhp D5 then? ..doesnt it defeat the object? smile

I get better MPG than a standard D5 - it now averages around 43, whereas it used to do about 41 and I don't hang around smile
