I am seriously looking at one as a 2nd car/commuter hack...I had been looking at VAG diesels until I saw how cheap D5s could be snapped up for (sub £3k)
what sort of MPG do you guys get from yours?

2004 163bhp.
In and around town, 35 - 45mpg.
Out and about 45mpg+. Have worked out 60mpg on a long slow (60mph ish) run from Hull to Frome.
The 185bhp losses a little on the mpg for the performance.

I've an S80 D5 now, but had an s60 D5 (163). Never really got much below 38, and on a long run easily 45 - 48. Even when I caned it, it never really went done. Good cars.
My bloody S80 (the new version) never better 34!!!

My choice would be a facelifted (~2004) D5 with manual box and 163bhp EuIII engine. Mid to high 40's all day long and mid to high 60's on long runs. My EuIV's returned ~10MPG inferior numbers

just to add.... do you have any idea how many non-English speakers are selling S60 D5s on Autotrader? it has been a nightmare trying to find a one with a owner that can communicate over the phone

590 miles into my S60 D5 SE ownership stereo is superb (13 speaker ProLogic upgrade) comfort is superb performance is very surprising tbh (in a VERY GOOD WAY) Fuel economy is amazing, 590miles on the first tank and still more to go handling is very good and nice and positive through the corners brakes are amazing overall I'm very pleased with her

Excellent choice Sir.
A very unassuming car, doesnt draw attention when your cracking on.
People just move over thinking your plod.

I am thinking about buying one of these. Is the diesel worth buying over the 2.0T petrol? They seem even cheaper.
What sort of mileages are you guys showing on the clock?
Do you think its worth the extra for a low mileage car,or is around 100K still a good buy?

Diesel cars should be used.
Personally I would prefer to buy a car that's done 15-20k a year and been well maintained then a low mileage one that maybe has question marks over a year or two where it wasnt used.
History as with any car is the important bit.
Main dealers are costly so expect many to have been through independents hands.
Schedules are available on the net for whatever engine you decide on.

I am also looking for a daily runabout for the commute and contemplating teh S60.
What things should you look out for when buying an olderf S60 D5 ?
What is the difference between a pre 2004 facelift and post (mechanically/trim wise etc)

I did a lot of research before buying mine and from what I read the pre 2004 ones are better...they don't have the DPF issues that the later Euro4 ones have

The stereos are unbelievably good in these cars - my Dad has one with the Pro-logic upgrade and it sounds amazing - not so good for the rear seat passengers though when the Pro-logic mode is on!
The pre-2004/5 cars are much more economical than the later ones because of the emissions regs that came in later on...
