Has a mind of its own.

Will work fine one minute, the next it stops blowing.

Any ideas?

Is this the LCD based system rather than the individual rotary dials ? If so these have quite a neat internal diagnostic system built in, which tell you everything that is going on with the system, a web search should help find the exact details.

Sounds like your blower motor regulator could be on the way out (fairly common problem) or the bearings on your blower motor.

This page should do it:

http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic40142.html

There is another one around where you can enter the codes and it reads out what is wrong, but could not find that with a cursory google, you may have better luck try searching on benzworld.org.

If it is the regulator I have one 'in stock' you can borrow to test.

Pressed "rest" for 5 seconds and get loads of numbers to scroll thru.

Which ones should I be looking at?

You have problems with:

ECT sensor (whatever that is)
Sun sensor (exterior sunlight temp check)
Emissions sensor (whatever that is)

The sun sensor on mine has always had that code and has never caused a problem so I would suggest investigating the other two.

Mercedes think it's the blower motor.

Is that a difficult job?

Was very easy on my S-Class, assuming it is a similar set up on your car about half an hour to do.
