I was a bit surprised at how much interest there has been in the highly technical solution (ie bodge) I came up with for the air intake vents so here are a few close-ups for anyone thinking of doing something similar.

I do think they look great and tidy up the engine bay nicely.
However I don't think that intaking from inside the wheelarch is a good idea... Just think about what will be in there on wet country roads.
I would like to rid mine of those manky hoses too, but so far I can't see a workable alternative that's not intrusive - like louvres in the bonnet or wings.
I hope this works for you...

They do look great what a good idea, one question though have you been out in the rain yet?

I'm just curious as where they are positioned (in the wheel arch) and with the pipe behind the vent lower, I would be worried that water could come in the car – just a thought before it’s too late.

I have been out in some quite heavy rain and nothing came in. It was just the once though and if rain does get in I'll mount them on spacers so that they are in the air flow which comes over the wheel arch moulding.

Looks can be deceptive. Diameter of the original intake is 3.5cms so that gives an area of 9.62cm2. The vents measure 12.5cm x 1cm so that’s 12.5cm2 which is actually a 30% increase.

I know you mentioned the ducts were from a freelander - can you expand and tell us what year/model?

Did you say they were the demist ducts?

Many thanks

I thought they were Freelander but I've looked back through the receipts and they are in fact 2001 Defender Td5 post vents. Sorry for any confusion, hope this helps. Joe

This was my version of what Joe has done with his vents... again they are Landrover parts, this time from an old Rangerover dash.

the duct on the wings have a foam filter to prevent the fresh flies from getting as far as my dash. Airflow is still OK and like Joe, I have removed that horrible trailing/snagging length of dirty flexible tube that we had previously. I'm pleased with the result.

This reminds me of an idea I had whilst looking at my S3C engine bay the other day;

1) Forget the air vents - "no roof" is the best ventilation and the internal vents never connected properly any way.
2) Completely remove the vent pipes that come from the bonnet - Not only does this clean up the engine bay, but also saves weight (just)....and...
3) ...the holes that are left in the front of the bonnet allow better cooling in the engine bay, but also give a good route of cooler air to the airfilter to the engine (Instant power increase!)

Now someone tell me why this is not a win-win solution.

Sounds reasonable to me...

Engine cooling is not a problem on mine... I need duct tape on the grill to help the engine get up to temperature at most times of the year.

I had thought of terminating the nearside vent pipe at the coil to try to keep that cool.

IIRC at SCH Jens car had no vent pipes (and not much else either hehe )

What I did on my car was to remove the nearside vent hose (just fixed it to the top of the wheelarch liner) and when the bonnet is shut the original vent blows directly at the air filter, that combined with my cold air trunking idea http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
should give me at least 25bhp more biglaughredcard I have still got my offside vent hose in place and I think I am going to remove it and fix it to the top of the wheelarch liner like the other side.

Cheers.....Tony..

...so today we fought the mighty anaconda...

...and lived

- What a lot of rubbish for a bit of ventilation...and boy did that jubilee clip by the gearbox take some getting to. Now looking forward to testing the acceleration with the massively improved power to weight ratio! ..also stage one complete in the engine bay renovation...

I would have thought they'd have sucked air out of the cabin, rather than blown it in! hehe

Sorry, just searching for something and spotted this!
