Heading north at the weekend, looking for a campsite near Glentress/Inners, Aviemore, and possibly Fort Bill.

Any recommendations, and are there any alternatives to Rosetta at Peebles? Nothing wrong with it, just want to try somewhere different. Ideal campsites would have:

-Minimal screaming kids/0630 footballing kids
-Bike friendly
-Tents not packed in like sardines
-Basic, clean facilities
-Fine with BBQ or a fire
-Nice views/off the beaten track if poss, but staggering distamce to a pub would be great

Also, slight rant, what is going on with campsite prices? Rosetta want £24 for a tent with an electric hookup. I do a lot of sailing, and it costs me almost exactly that to moor my boat overnight as a visitor in a marina, with shore power, security guards, coded entrance to the pontoons, wet-room shower facilities, and that's in the Solent/Isle of Wight (the most expensive place to sail bar Sardinia!), not a field in the middle of Scotland! B&B starts at the £50 mark, seems to me that £24 for a tent is a bid rude really!

So add "reasonable rates" to the above list too please!

Thanks in advance!

Glentress have just had some of the wigwams added. Not a campsite but might work as an alternative:

Plenty in Fort William, can't remember the one I stayed in last time but it was about £7 a night.

Nice one, thanks. Probably just go for tents but looks good for next time!

I stayed at the Rothiemurchas camp site a few months ago.

Nice and quiet, with plenty of space a river running along side the site. The facilites are really good too with a decent shower in a private room. It is on the road from Avimore to Loch Muick on the right hand side.

Rothiemurchus is my campsite of choice when camping at Aviemore. Might use it again next week when I'm planning to go to Laggan Wolftrax.

I've booked Rosetta for a group of 20 in September for the reason that the other campsite had a load of bad reviews (can be found on Google).

Fort William, the only place I can think of is in Glen Nevis. Haven't stayed there though, so I can't comment.

Thanks for the advice...just back from a great trip, mixing biking with walking/touristy stuff. Rode Glentress, Innerleithen, then moved over to Aviemore, and stayed at Rothiemurchus, on the island. What a great campsite...about as close to wild camping as you can get but within 100 yds of your own bathroom!

Couple of natural rides there (superb ride out to Loch nameescapesme starting at the campsite) and Glen Feshie. Aviemore really is outdoor paradise...snowball fights in August anyone? Could have stayed at leat another week!

Not impressed with Rosetta at Peebles this time though. Last year was fine, this year the toilets were nothing short of disgusting, ceiling leaking god knows what and the washing up room stinking so badly you had to leave the door open. Must have been weeks since it had had any kind of proper clean...please, just don't bother laying on a crap DJ playing until 11 in the courtyard (just what's needed after a huge drive and before a day's riding...not), just make the showers less of a health hazard.

Won't be going back...
