There are some good (and safe) B&Bs here: http://www.stevecarter.com/ansh/ansh7.htm

(mind you August is a rubbish month to come both weather, tourist and midge wise)

Thanks lads. I haven't been up in august for decades.
I'd forgotten about the midges. The scars have healed, obviously.
And accom in Edinburgh will be a nightmare in Aug, though she's probably not too worried about seeing the festival as she lives in Avignon and they have a similar, but much smaller festival there in July .
Would september be a safer bet, or is it better to put it off till May/June next year?
I've been telling her for years that it's the most beautiful landscape in Europe, so there's a bit of national pride on this one.

May has least rain, most sunshine and (almost) no midges. Middle of the month is quiet too (between two Bank holidays), so B&Bs are generally empty. Ferries are also empty, so one can pop over to the Hebrides without prior booking. IMHO between Easter and Whitsun is the best time to come (though the colours, sunsets and long evenings are better in June).Would september be a safer bet, or is it better to put it off till May/June next year?
First part of September is often very nice here, July & August, generally crap.
ETA: The high pressures that England get in summer push the Atlantic fronts over northern Scotland. So if it's nice in S.E. England in Summer it's usually crap in the Highlands (and vice versa).
Forgive me if you knew all this!
