Birthday's looming and the missus has agreed to be dragged around a musuem, but i can't decide which. Cosford has the cold war hanger and v-bombers, but duxford the sr-71 and concorde. Any thoughts?

Both are good.

Cosford's most unique atributes are the research aircarft and German oddballs.

Duxford's is the sheer volume - plus the American museum and airliner collection.

Both Duxford and Cosford have a TSR2 on display (the only surviving complete airframes).

I would struggle to choose between them. They are both great, and are both a full days worth of museum. At Duxford this time of your, you are more likely to see things flying, and their workshops might be open.

Plus you can re-enact moments from battle of Briatin- tap her handbag and say "Gas mask cases. They are not handbags. I appreciate that female requirements differ somewhat from men, however.... TAKE COVER!!!!

And on a landing: "you can teach monkeys to fly better then that"

In fact, watch the film before going and you'll enjoy spotting what was filmed where.

Cosford has a lot of younger British aircraft- eraly jets etc. In fact, they do complement each other very well indeed.

I don't think there's much that Cosford has got in the Cold War hangar that Duxford hasn't got lying around. The only reason that Cosford has got a Valiant and Duxford hasn't is that Cosford's is the only one in existence biggrin

Cosford is part of the RAF Museum. The Valiant used to be at Hendon but was moved north to Cosford when the Cold War annexe was opened.

Duxford is owned by the Imperial War Museum although it also houses collections owned by other bodies, companies and private individuals. I would say Duxford has the most to see overall - but they are both terrific places to visit.

'The engine's overheating and so am I. We either stand down or blow up'

(Ian McShane)

And Larry with splendid dispassion about the claims figures: 'If they're right, the Germans will give up. If they're wrong, they'll will be marching up Whitehall by Friday'.

I may have the odd word wrong but the effect is the same

It was actually Michael Caine who had that line. I dont blame you for getting it wrong, though: Not a lot of people know that..... paperbag

You could chuck Hendon into the mix too. Free entry and lots of rare WW2 German aircraft on display and the worlds only Hawker Typhoon - I could stand and look at that aircraft for hours .... cloud9

The Germans won't come here.

Can't say I blame them. Damp tents and an old shack full of dead flies.

Curses. Another button off the old anorak. At least I know a yellow bomb when I see it. In fact I think only G15 has the full complement of buttons left...

Duxford does have more although I think Cosford might have more interesting stuff for someone not interested in planes.

Duxford does have warbirds flying from it though.

The BBMF museum is worth a trip to though it is not a full day like Duxford. Call ahead to make sure the aircraft are actually in!!

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

There were no Lancasters in the BoB but everyone seems to turn a blind eye smile

And the various marks of Spitfires and Hurricanes as flown are largely post Battle of Britain as well as the DC-3/C-47 and, of course, their Chipmunks.

It's really an RAF Memorial Flight in truth.

If you're up near the BBMF, then Cranwell (no museum, but interesting nonetheless), the museum at newark and visit Just jane would all be great. Although on reflection, the distances between these would eman more time driving then visiting!
