Just bought one of the above (1 way) and the diagram on the packaging only has live and switched live.

Would you expect there to be an earth? Not sure what the current switch has but what would I do if it has an earth?

I'm not a spark, but why would it need an earth if you don't get anywhere near the switch itself? Presumably you're isolated from the switch by several feet of non-conductive cord?

Unless the casing is metal, you don't need an earth, reason as above.

A good quality switch will many times have an earth connection to be used as a loop point to continue to other equipment.

On a similar tack, does anyone know if you can buy a bathroom light switch that doesn't make that loud 'click' when pulled? I just replaced mine recently and it's so loud that I get woken up if the kids use the bathroom in the night...

You can get flat sensor switches that you just wave your hand over. You can put them behind wallpaper and possibly tiles.

NB I was at a hotel recently and the WC there had a light that was activated by an IR or movement sensor - IR would make more sense - the light came on when you went in and went off when you left. Presumably it has a daylight over-ride so it doesn't come on during daylight.

The switch itself won't need an earth because it is not conductive, however, an earth has to be run to all accessories in case they are replaced with something having exposed conductive parts and to allow continuity to accessories connected down the line from it. There should be an earth terminal in the switch but it will not be electrically connected to anything.

All class 2 palstic boxes have to have an earth termination point, although some cheaper ones don't seem to.
