Gone to the dark side
Discussion
After always owning Nikon's I had to sell up to move to Oz.
As i was not tied in with lenses anymore I tried out the Canon 7D
I now own,
Canon 7D Body
Canon EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS
EF Lens 70-200 f2.8L IS II USM
Canon BG-E7 Battery grip
Sandiisk Extreme 16GB CF card
Any tips to get the best out of this kit or anything else I should own, im looking at possibly adding a 1.6 tele convertor, thoughts? worth it?

1.4 TC will be well worth it, 2.0tc works OK on the mkII but not quite as good as say a 100-400L I dont think.
18-135 isnt the best lens but its not a bad kit lens.
At least double the 1/focal length rule for pics, and dont be too upset if you dont get pixel sharp pics at 100% view, theres a hella lot of pixels on the 7D and you need great technique and a sharp lens to do it full justice (tho the 70-200mkII is a great lens!).
Learn how the AF works, plenty of proper advice on the net (including some good stuff from canon), its complex and picking the wrong settings can result in a mess. AF setup can give you 4 or 5 different options at the press of a button or two too.
Also try doing some focus tests with your lens (especialy the 70-200 as DOF is very thin at 200mm/f2.8) and use MA to adjust.
Tis a cracking camera love mine.

Spot on Rob - It's taken a few thousand pics to discover that myself, but it's very reassuring to get the same opinion from another user.Welcome to the dark side MudwiG!

From what I've read the new 70-200 mk2 works a treat with the 1.4x converter, very little loss in IQ.
Btw, your on the bright side now, just look at the colour of your 70-200
Cheers.
True, have wanted an L series since I was about 15 years old!Btw, your on the bright side now, just look at the colour of your 70-200

will comapare the 1.4 TC and 1.6 this week, will also need a new monopod too with the weight of it

Following up on this, does anyone know when the Canon TC MK3's come out, I heard december?
Also bought a 24-70mm 2.8L this week, amazing lens!
Don't know but the RRP prices seem to have just about doubled compared with the Mk2s.Also bought a 24-70mm 2.8L this week, amazing lens!
I have a 70-200 f2.8 IS MkII and a x2 extender (Mk2) and they seem to work very well together on a 1D3. I tried the combination (not my own lens and adapter) on a 7D and got good results as well - some were outstanding in terms of the detail resolved.
Thoroughly recomend the Magic Lantern guide to the 7D.
Contains the same information in the manual to the same level of detail, but in a much more readable and digestable format. Have found it invaluable in helping me get to grips with the huge amount of functionality and customisation offered by the 7D.
Invest some serious time in learning the various autofocus modes - the default mode of having all 19 foucs points enabled yields variable and sometimes dissapointing results, but it's absolutely awesome once you get to grips with it and learn to set it up.

The 70-200 is a stunning lens, very jealous of that!
Need to look at some shots of the earlier versions of it with a 1.4x TC as they are starting to come into my price range.
It's really way out of my preferred budget as well but it is just so good there was no real all round alternative. Had to be done. Thankfully there are deals well below RRP.Need to look at some shots of the earlier versions of it with a 1.4x TC as they are starting to come into my price range.

The best UK non-import prices I can see at the moment for a 70-200 Mk2 are £1649 (London area) and £1690 (Carlisle). Prices are slightly volatile presumably following the USD exchange rate for some reason. Nothing too dramatic recently.
Not sure about policy for posting links and I have not personally used either firm (though have spoken to one of them and all sounded OK) so maybe more details by PM would be appropriate rather than a direct post here. (Assuming you don't find them with a quick search. I think they should come up near the top of the list .... )
