I've now got to the point where there is not enough room on the laptop to rip any more music thumbup so I need an external hard drive.

Is there anything I need to look for when choosing?

There's a 1TB drive on offer in Maplin for £65 which looks pretty good value smile

Be aware that cheap consumer drives come with a hardware only warranty - they won't hear the anguish when you lose all your films, photos and childhood memories.

Buy two, and use them alternately wink

These things are not very robust. The sort of brown-out that a typical PC will shrug off without a problem could easily kill your data on an external drive, if it happens at the wrong time. They're often sold as 'back-up' drives, but when push comes to shove the external may well give up before your PC does.

They are useful, but always use a proper back-up device for the really important stuff.
