My laptop screen is smashed, totally unusable.

Checked eBay and a new screen is £60-70. Happy to pay this, just wondered if anyone knows a good sote to get new LCD screens that may be a bit cheaper?

Hi there,

I actually do these kind of repairs for a living, I hope you don't mind me asking some questions:

- Have you tried to use the laptop with an external monitor to make sure it still functions normally? Unless it's a top-end laptop, there's absolutely no point in you buying another screen if you've done damage to the motherboard.

- What type of laptop is it? The screen size / type will make a big difference to the price of a replacement. You also need to make sure you get a screen with the right connection, as laptop screens don't conform to a standard.

- How are you planning on getting a replacement screen fitted? This can be a difficult job to do properly, depending on the laptop.

Seconded, also do this as part of my job, even screens that are for the same model of laptop we have had different connectors on, fitting can be a bd too, I've known other engineers at our company break the new screen during fitting!

It's a samsung r510.

I've had it plugged into my tv last night working fine, it's just the screen.

I've also managed to get the front bezel off and have managed to take the screen out.

Fortunately, that's a straightforward design: You should be fine fitting it provided that you know which end of a screwdriver to use! As I said earlier, just make sure you get the correct replacement screen. You should be able to use the original cable, but make sure the screen has the same connector on the back.

Yeah it was pretty simple to get off, just a few screws and clips.

Is there anywhere you'd recommend for getting a new screen? Obviously there's eBay and websites along the lines of LCD-screens.com (just an example, not sure if that's real) from google searches, but those sites seem a bit dodgy to be honest.

£60 on ebay for a replacment screen is very good value if I am honest. Even from my suppliers I would not get one for much cheaper.

Just again, like has already been drummed in, make sure it is the correct connection. If the seller has a few of them (so they won't be gone tommorrow) ask them to take a picture of the connector so you can double check it is the same.

What resolution is the screen? You may be able to upgrade depending on the laptop and spec! (Would make sure you have a decent dedicated graphics card if going this route though)

To be honest, unless you're buying in bulk, eBay is probably your best bet...however, the usual eBay precautions apply.readit

In this case:

- Make sure it's not from Hong Kong! jester
- Make sure it's 100% compatible with your laptop
- Make sure (if you're buyng used) that the screen is tested, working and has a warranty.
