Having worked with lots of the ocean rowers I think you might want to reevaluate your posh phrasing.... they are normally big strong blokes who might take a little offense to that!

If you want a boat, the company that organizes the races know which boats are for sale at what time. They get reused lots, some have now done 5 crossings and still going strong.

Oh and don't expect them to be cheap, average price for a 2 man boat is about £35k

The majority of the boats have been designed by the same guy, although they've been built by a number of different boat builders - there are a couple that I know of that have done quite a few of them.

They can either be built for you, bought second-hand or hired. There are quite a few around, some set-up for solo, pairs, fours or more. As SpeedYellow said, some of them have done quite a few crossings. The most I know of is 5, but there may be one with more.

Any questions you have, I'd be happy to try to answer. I know a little bit about it.

I helped build one when I was on work experience from school, wish I could remember who it was for but it was built at Rowsell's in Exmouth in 2002 I think.

I opened this thread five minutes after reading the obituary of the guy who designed this modern recreation of a trireme:

You would be surprised ! Although Comps are unlikely to have funding for buying boats and equiptment many are affiliated to local Rowing Clubs and consequently train and race.

Sam, have sent you an email

Thanks to the rest of you for your help, I know the posh boy comment was a bit cheeky! I was dragged up by the scruff of my neck but I do appreciate that these guys go through hell and train bloody hard before the event.
