Annual Vehicle Display and House Open Day (GRRC Members Only)
One of the highlights in the GRRC Calendar is the Annual Vehicle Display and House Open Day.
The Open Day enables all members and their guests to view a diverse mix of members’ vehicles displayed in front of Goodwood House. Members are encouraged to vote for their favourite vehicle and the winner will be presented with a prize on the steps of Goodwood House.
Location:- Goodwood House
Date(s):- Sun 08 Aug 2010 10:00 AM
Nice turn out of cars, only two bikes, one of which was the ubiquitous James Wheelers.
To my certain knowledge he has been invited for the last three years in a row, always with two vehicles. This year he had three. By my reckoning that means he has denied at least 6 other members the opportunity to show their vehicles, He had been asked to show an Austin 7 this year, but there was a perfectly good alternative one in the ballroom carpark. Guess it just shows that some members are more equal than others.

Thanks for kind words re the cars.. There were supposed to be more bikes (x3) but - for some reason - they didn't turn up.. Not had any messages this-morning either - rather dissapointing. To my certain knowledge he has been invited for the last three years in a row, always with two vehicles. This year he had three. Re James Wheeler. Firsly, I should point out that James hasn't stopped anyone else from coming. The number of cars is governed by the number of places for lunch in the ballroom. James only takes 2 places (this is what's offered to every vehicle displayed). Second - since we've been running the 'favourite car' competition, James' cars and bikes have always featured in the top 5-10. He is custodian of the most fabulous and rare collection of cars and the results show that it's what the Members want to see. This yr, he brought the Austin 7 pick-up, the tiny childs car and a motorbike. All drew great crowds throughout the day. I suppose you could look at it the other way and say that James is actually providing a better show for the Members? I should also point out that we had a more std Austin 7 last year and James' was the only one we received an entry for this yr.
When we select the cars, we take no notice of who owns them - rather the way they look and/or their history and how they will form the entire display. There are others who have managed to display more than one car (the F40 and Escort TC this yr were owned by the same person)but the same applies to them with regard to the number of places taken for lunch.
As for the comments about some Members being more equal than others - it's utter rubbish.
Cheers..
J
So does it not ever occur to you James that it would be a better use of club resources, and would engender a greater feeling of belonging, if you gave as many different members as possible the chance to exhibit. As was stated in the newsletter you were 'overwhelmed by the number of excellent entries' so I find it hard to believe you would struggle to find worthy cars.
Picking the same exhibitors yearly hardly smacks of fairness, no matter how many cars one might own.

Anyway, back on topic, thanks should go to Alison & James for arranging yet another excellent open day with some great cars, both on display and in the car parks, decent weather and good company. It was nice to meet several GRRC members and be able to put faces to a names (of course this is much easier if people use their real names on the forums). I love the eclectic mix of cars, and even though there was not one but two Bugattis my favourite was the 1929 Humber oh, and the Atco child's car. A great day all round.

Did you have a car that you particularly wanted to display?

Personally I was very surprised and thrilled when my old baja beetle was chosen for display. I thought it was a lovely eccentric mix of cars there. Funnily enough the 1 bhp childs car and the Austin 7 pick up were both among my favourites so I'm glad JW was asked to bring along more than one.
I was very surprised to see one of my favourite cars, a 250 GTO TR, leaving the car park at the end of the day. I wish I'd taken a walk up there now, I just got too distracted chatting to everyone who showed an interest in my motoring travels. Lovely to meet you all! A huge thanks to the organisers, James, Alison et al and to James Ewing for fixing the bug for me so I could drive home again.
Oh and if anyone thought it was a little cheeky, the beetle driving to the front of the queue of cars waiting to be parked. Well, it was because he'd been broken down on the road near the kennels for nearly an hour(thanks to the one car who stopped while the rest of you drove past). We managed to get him started again but James wanted to get him parked up before he died again, so we were sent to the front. Highly embarrassing, being invited along, only for the car to break down and do a little oil wee on the lawn!

No, what I thought was cheeky was the way you grabbed someone to help with your car saying "Oh you've got an MG t-shirt on, would you help me get my car started?" As if he's an MG chap, he's bound to have experince of non-starting cars! p.s. nice to meet you too Rich (& Denise) Oh and if anyone thought it was a little cheeky...

James sorted it out, turned out to be a dodgy set of points giving a weak spark. So I was in the right area. Now I just need to learn to fix it myself
