I could use some help regarding XP pro 64 bit.

I'm looking to build a PC for home to be used as both my main machine for general home use and to use as a development box for Cognos TM1. It needs to be XP 64 as the TM1 version I'll be using will not run on W7.

Does anyone run XP 64 for home use and, if so, do you have any major issues with software/drivers etc?

Secondly does anyone know of a decent source for a copy of XP 64? There are a couple in the states on ebay but I'm struggling to find it over here at a decent price.

Cheers.

Drivers are a nightmare. It was never properly sorted, and I got fed up and went back to 32bit until W7 came out.

Install Windows 7 64 bit and then run Cognos inside a VM

As above, 64 bit XP is horrid.

Just to air a contrary view I used it for a number of years without any problems, the vast majority of devices nowadays have 64 bit drivers and did a few years back also, the ones that don't tend to be those super cheap chinese things like those £10 USB micoscopes and crap like that. Anything with a decent manufacturer behind it should have 64 bit support.

You should still check your specific devices to check they will all be compatible.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I can run a 64 bit virtual XP machine in W7 XP mode. The TM1 model is around 10 gig (it's a RAM resident OLAP tool) so 32 bit is no good.

I'm running XP 64bit at home, drivers can be a problem for cheaper devices but I've not struggled too badly with anything that is mainstream. The biggest problem I've had to be honest is getting games to install as everything reads the version number and thinks you are running Server 2003! (Which is kind of true since it is essentially Server 2003 64bit in a dress), even then most will actually run fine - you just need to hack the MSI around a bit to get past the installation checks.

No, not compatibility mode. VM = Virtual Machine

http://www.vmware.com/products/workstation/

Download a trial and search for a key.

Been using XP64 on a dell laptop for 2 years now. Only had driver problems with 3G modem, but this was easiy resolved after a bit of internet research.
I run a 32 bit vm for a couple of applications like VPN, but everything else works fine.

Thanks for the replies.

I've picked up a copy of XP Pro 64 for £60 so I'm going to give it a go and see how it works out. If it becomes too much of a pain I'll go W7 64 and look at virtualisation.
