I presume this was a stunt for a Hollywood movie. In the 1920s, film makers seemed to enjoy staging aeroplane crashes into barns, roofs etc.

The Skywayman is a lost 1920 American silent film directed by James P. Hogan and produced and distributed by Fox Film Corporation. This serial starred aviator Ormer Locklear and is known today as the production in which Locklear was killed while performing a night time stunt. This film was probably conceived as a serial but, due to Locklear's death, Fox telescoped the remaining footage into a feature film.[1][2]
