I got on a bike for the first time in 20+ years when i bought one of these last august:

http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/bike_path/fx/...

One year later and i absolutely love cycling.

Did the first commute after a few months, and i have never been on public transport since.

The trusy trek has held-up well to a daily beating, and now i'm after an upgrade.

I can go through the cycle-to-work scheme, so i'm looking to spend the equivalent of a grand on another hybrid.

Essentially i want something that is much lighter and quicker, but can still tough enough to cope with the odd dirt track at the weekend and cobbles etc on the commute.

What are the general opinions on an alfine hub?

The trek has become almost too low geared, its pretty flat around here so i would happily trade less cogs for more pace.

I've been looking towards a bad boy or a sirrus but would welcome any pointers especially towards less obvious choices.

Any recommendations?

There are a couple of nice looking Scott's that also spring to mind, and if you can hold off a little longer, the new Whyte hybrids look lovely, but probably not around for a few months yet.

Any reason you can't keep your Trek for the weekend dirt track stuff and get a road bike for the commute? Two bikes are always a better idea than one... hehe

I've been looking for:
GT Transeo disc 1.0/2.0
Scott P3
Giant XR2
Orbea Elgata (and tweaking it)
Essentially I want something with front shocks, fat tyres and discs although I'm now thinking twice about the shocks as a hybrid should be a little more upright than my old MTB.

Sadly my firm don't do C2W so I'm having to shop around, so far without success.

Thanks for all the replies, i looked at a Boardman yesterday, nice bike but not too sure about the "double tap" shifters on the top model.

Re road bike possibly, have caught myself eyeing a few allez's recently, would these hold-up to a daily commute through winter?

I'd say use your trek again in the winter.

I had a road and a mtb and just put slicks on the mtb in the winter (late Oct to Mid March).

I'm pretty sold on the Specialized Crosstrail (Expert) because it has sus fork, discs and decent drive train, but it didn't stop me looking at the Boardman over the weekend, and the Giant Eclipse and Trek today. All really nice machines. I think I'm still leaning towards the Spec, but the others have given me food for thought.
