Does anyone know the current whereabouts of the motor yacht Shemara?

LOL, no not mine, as far as I know still owned by Harry Hyams, I remember she was moored in Southampton when I was a kid, apparently laid up on the east coast for a while, talk of her going to Scotland but I'm not sure if she did.

Lovely old ship.

ETA - think I have found her, according to the web laid up in Lowestoft

I went to see the old girl today, I couldn't work on the car as its raining.

See pics, she's listing a bit, looked better than I thought she might.

No, I couldn't, there was no one about to chat to and lots of barriers in place. I hope the refit goes ahead and restores her to her former glory.

What's the steering at the stern for close manoeuvres when coming alongside?

My father, 'Sam'(Douglas)Koster (ex Sqn. Ldr. RAF (Marine Service)), was navigating officer on the "Shemara" from the later times of the Dockers ownership through into Harry Hyams ownership. During that time the Shemara made a number of Mediterranean trips and one or two to the Caribbean including one where the captain (against my father's judgement)insisted on a 'short cut' which resulted in scraping over a reef which cut open part of the forward hull under the waterline. Only by quick action, heading for and running the bow onto a shallow sandy beach, was a sinking avoided but by that time she had taken in over 500 tons of water. By stuffing mattresses into the fisure they were able to limp to a dry dock on a nearby island and get a temporary repair sufficient for the Shemara to make the return trans-Atlantic trip back to Southampton - I think to Thornycroft's yard - where a full repair was made. In the 70's, certainly the late 70's, the Shemara was kind of permanently berthed in Southampton. Most of the crew were kept on in order to keep the Shemara 'ship shape' and essentially ready for any trip whims of its owner, which actually never happened! I remember my father commuted weekdays (by train)into Southampton from our family home in the New Forest mainly to keep the navigation charts up to date. My father finally retired from Hyams employment in the early to mid 1980's (he was already over 80 by then!).

Not sure about the wheel, i'll ask my dad, he was the captain for a bit

my favourite part was the table football game on the stern deck that had built in corner takers....and a bag of thrupenny bits to play with...

It had (has) also got an amazing Riva Olympic on the deck, for putting ashore....

A thing of beauty, to be sure...

that and the

ugly duckling cabin cruiser
dutch launch
launch
topper dinghy
Jet Bike

All stored on the deck with custom made blue canvas covers...

Will try and find a pic of me on the bridge...

It may have been sold, but as Mrs Hyams died last week, i am not totally sure.
