I need to buy a cat flap for DIY installation. As I only want my cat to come in I'm looking for an electronic flap that uses the microchip the vet injects for identification.

I'm not sure how long batteries are likely to last but I prefer the idea to having to connect a mains cable to the door. Or are batteries a really bad idea?

Please could you recommend a flap and retailer.

Have one. It seems to work very well.

Seems better than the collar type.

However my cat is highly territorial and goes off like a guided missile if any intruder dares try to come in biggrin

+1 And the newer version is soon to come out of beta ( I was beta tester ) magnet much better at closing flap if you have a gentle cat coming in and more programmable functions.

Seconded on the Petporte. Although mine seems to have developed a fault on the lock stopping the buggers from getting back in. Funny watching them headbutting the perspex flap after hearing the "beep" for the unlock.

Then you'll be wanting one of these:

Bought from my local vets for £70ish.

Batteries last for ages - at least a year per set.

First one I had seemed faulty, so I phoned the company who promptly sent a complete new replacement unit and were really helpful. Fault seemed to cure itself, but I now have a spare at least in case it comes back!

Cat seems happy with it, and got used to in a day or two.
