Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear....

This is something to be aware of if you're considering buying HP retail products!! Turns out their warranty is provided by "The Tech Guys"! Sod that for a laugh, I'm used to dealing with HP servers and ProCurve kit through the commercial division and Jesus what a shock when I found out my daughter's laptop would have to be processed by a spotty oik just out of school.

I've sold HP since the nineties precisely because the warranty is so good but the first time I need to use it myself I have to deal with an automated switchboard.

HP, you can suck my dick if you think I'm entrusting my daughters laptop to some incompetent script monkey irked

Hey now. Be fair. They are not all script monkeys.

To be fair to HP, they have to cut costs somewhere if everyone wants £250 laptops.

I do hate HP though.

'tis true. The revenue on these things is tiny. You want to pay less, you get less service.

Do you complain about the service on RyanAir too? smile

our warranty for IBM servers goes to a call centre in Scotland
whenever i need to call them, i always find myself speaking to a young wee lassie who sounds like Clare Grogan cloud9

I think you are wrong in your assertion that HP warranty is with the Tech Guys. I suspect the laptop was purchased from PC World, Currys, Dixons or Pixmania. If so then it is indeed the case that the warranty is with the Tech Guys. Don't blame HP however; blame DSGi as their contract with HP says they will deal with warranty issues and not HP. This is so DSGi can shave a few pennies off the unit price from HP.

I called IBM re my ThinkPad and got an Indian guy, but he was actually in Scotland. Apparently IBM bring Indian employees over to staff the call-centre - perhaps so they can truthfully say it's in the UK?

Most bizzare experience I had was with Gateway some years ago - I liked their kit and had several desk and laptops from them. On a rare occasion I needed to call support I got put into a chat-room! Listening to the other callers was a eye-opener in terms of what those support people have to deal with.

Unless that was a while ago I'm surprised IBM didn't politely tell you to try calling China... wink

The issue is not being aware that the warranty isn't with HP punch

It wasn't that long ago - I *think* IBM still provides the support to Lenovo. Even if they do it Lenovo's name now, it could still be IBM people - that's pretty common.
