Long story short, just (in past week) split with long-term girlfriend, 4 months into 12 month lease on our rented home. Letting agency has just found some people to move in at the end of this month, however they say that the landlord will probably ask us to cover the fees and charges that landlords usually incur when tenants move out (because we're breaking the contract early). The agency say this will amount to about £750.

It cost us half that when we moved in!! I haven't yet received a break down on what these charges are, but is this correct? This being the first time I've rented somewhere I don't know whether this is normal, or whether they're just trying to extract some more cash from us before we disappear!?

You have a fixed term Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement, of which another 8 months needs to run of the tenancy.

I would say therefore that £750 appears to be reasonable, although still open for you to negotiate with the letting agents.
